So far our 3yr old has been to a couple of shows and we are very pleased with her, done about 6 in hand classes in total.

However on 2 occasions she has lifted her bum at the horse behind her. Not kicked out properly just lifted her bum at them. Both these times have been because another horse was inches from her back end. The first time was when a much bigger horse followed very very close to her and in the end she had just had enough of it. The second was in a lap of honner, when again a bigger horse than her ran up her bum when trotting.

I would never run up behind another horse that close so it makes me mad when other people do it. Is this the norm? And the big question, do you think she should wear a red ribbon.

By the way she never shows any signs of nastyness to other horses in general, weather in field or if the pass very close in front of her, its just when they run up her bum and she cant see them.

Personally I wouldnt put a ribbon on her. You are just going to be labelling her as a kicker which she isnt and that may go against you.

Hopefully as she becomes more experienced in the ring she will learn to cope with those idiots who dont show good manners.

I'd use a green ribbon, totally justified given the horses age. Should alert others to the fact she may be unpredictable without labling her a kicker.

Hmm, green ribbon? Is that for youngsters?

Im hopefull she will realise in time they arnt trying to eat her and ignor them. But dont want it to get out of hand.

Incidentally, in the youngstock classes it dosn't seem to happen, as if people are more aware they cant run up a babies bum

i always put a red ribbon on my horses but thts for rideouts not showing, just give me a bit more space. i would put it on her but then take it off in the show ring??

I would go for a green one, she was perfectly justified lifting her bum up to those who did not respect her space.

A green ribbon is for young or inexperienced horses.

It would stop other people using your mare as a breaking system!

Yep thats just what it feels like.
Problem is its only in the ring it happens. Out side the ring i would just walk her out of the way or turn her so she could see the other horse.

Will raid kids bedroom for a green ribbon then

If in doubt ribbon up. If nothing else it just gives you an "I told you so" if the worst is to happen. I once saw a young stallion with red, green and white ribbon. People got the message! lol Incidently you wouldn't have known he was entire or that he was a kicker but it was apparent he was young.

I use a red ribbon - I tried green one but no one paid any attention

People steer clear of red ones though

Although my horse hasn't kicked while out she's very green and if someone cannons into her then she may well do...

The yard I am at has a legal case going on between two liveries because 2 people hacked out together and one of the horses kicked out and hit the other rider and broke her leg. The woman who's leg got broken is sueing the other woman because her horse kicked out (dont ask, I dont agree with it) Anyway the woman who's leg got broken is apparently in her rights to sue, so I would say wear a ribbon just in case, then nobody can come back to you with a stupid case like this. Some people just dont appriciate that horse riding is a dangerous sport. Needless to say no one will hack out with said person anymore and she has lost a lot of friends.
