hi guys!

just a general question really.....

anyone on here own a red setter? or have owned one?

My boyf used to have one (ancient!) as his aunty died and the rest of the family was gonna have her PTS and he basically ran off with her! (hehe) but she died last year and he would love another one..... in the way distant future when we get a bigger house with a big garden and a bit more time etc.....

just interested to hear peoples storys and opinions on this breed as it is rarely mentioned in here!
I think they are beautiful!

I've never owned one myself, but when I was little our neighbour had one. She was so well-trained, when they went for walks she'd trot ahead carrying her owner's umbrella so proudly.

She was a really beautiful dog, and very sweet with all us children who would crowd around her for a pat! I would love to have one some day.

Hi
I've got one

and she's the best in the world (alongside my retriver that is). She is wonderfully batty, totally lovable a complete lady - and then she'll burp in your face

We're even more lucky because she survived very serious menigitis 2 years ago - still on treatment, so she's a very special girl. (That isnt a breed specific thing by the way, its sods law, so don't panic!)

They are fantastic pets in all ways, quite reserved in public, people think she's so quiet and meek

haha if they only new. Can recommend a fantastic breeder if you need info who have super dogs and wonderful litters.
Hope you get one!

We used to have one - she was adorable and made to 15!! Was fab with kids etc Dead lazy around the house and needed to be surgically removed from any heat source and was the worlds best thief!! She used to steal the food and our lab would eat most of it!! Was definatley the most intelligent dog we have ever had - not fruit loops just very very clever!!Out walking she would run for miles - loved chasing hares but never caught one even though she came close!! Did catch a few squirrels and rabbits - never hurt or even marked them in any way but would just bring them back as a present - cue lab and spangle going nearly hysterical to be so close to such a thing!!! Not keen on water - prefer to be clean - obviously the odd twig hanging off your feathers is de rigeur.....!!

Big softy, very gentle - would have loved to have been a lap dog but grew to big!! Would definately have another one - my aunt breeds them and there is a breeder near us - cuddled 2 of their puppies in the vets recently. When you are out with them you get lots of attention as they are such striking dogs and they love the fuss.

I know they are high energy intelligent dog (along with beau they will destroy us! mwahahaha!)

its still interesting to read people experiences etc

they are just SO beautiful and eye catching as you say!

We had two when I was a child. We were given them but ended up rehoming one with relatives as the two together were a bit of a nightmare. In a nice way! They had both been a bit spoiled. They both had naughty habits but tbh I dont think this was due to being spoiled it was just in their characters. We had to have all our kitchen cupboards and the fridge taped up. Any food left on the kitchen surfaces was stolen, including food on the hob so no leaving the kitchen whilst cooking! LOL!!!!We had to have chains on the back door so one dog couldnt keep going in and out. The same dog used to hide our other dog's toys in the water trough. She would also get in the trough and watch to see when mum had left the kitchen and then come indoors with muddy wet feet. She would get intensely jealous of our GSD who just played constantly and this resulted in the man next door threatening to shoot her due to her incessant barking! I honestly think there were times when mum would have handed him a gun!

She was cunning till the day she died.

Both dogs had good temperaments. On walks they would run for miles and always find the mud to paddle in!

Both were lovely dogs nevertheless. Full of character!

But IMO a young persons breed! Someone with lots of energy and time.

ETA Both of them were very nervous with loud noises such as fireworks and thunder. The dog had a heart attack in a thunderstorm and died, aged 10. Not sure if it common in the breed as my mum swore never to have another setter!

My friend breeds them and shows very successfully (been placed at Crufts).
They are fantastic fun dogs. Lots of character, as post above, always trying to steal food, love running, absolutely adorable.
I also know of some which do agility very successfully.
