my horse has had her front shoes off for 7 weeks now and back ones off for 13 weeks. she went out on her longest ride on different surfaces since no shoes yesterday morning and this morning on the sole of her front hooves she has red marks.

they are mainly located around the toe and look like heat rash - i think they are little bruises.

do i need to do anything with her feet? or just rest her for a couple of days?

thanks

Pics? What did you ride her on? Is she at all lame/sore today?

They sound like bruises and to be red/ visible fairly bad.
With all the mud/wet you have apprently been having rencently her feet are probably quite soft so will bruise easily. You could try spraying iodine or an iodene/formalin mix on but you need to consult a vet/blacksmith for this mix as its nasty stuff.

A bit of meths ocassionallly on the sole to help dry them out a bit may help, again if the farrier agrees that the wet is making her feet soft.

I suggest rest her and keep an eye on her feet. You want to becareful of bruising as it can form abcesses.

i'll try and take some pics tonight. shes not lame but does seem a bit sore. the ride was a mixture of surfaces rocky tracks, soft grass, roads etc

maybe too much all in one go and yes the weather has been rubbish so i guess feet will be a bit softer.

Sound like bruises. Get some Keratex hoof hardener from you local tack shop and rest her til the bruising has come out. You could put some arnica gel on if she is in her stable as this draws out the bruise.

Snip gets this occasionally as he has a tendancy to land toe first if his muscles are playing him up.

My trimmer says it is blood spots due to concussion, we are woring to correct it but it does come back every time he has an RER flare up!

could be a touch of laminitis - get the vet and farrier to check it out and keep her off any forsty grass until she has been seen.

Bruising, soreness, laminitis etc amount to the same thing in my book ie damage to the sensitive laminae (whether in the sole or the wall) of the foot. The barefoot thing is all well and good (both mine are barefoot) but it's not something to be rushed, 8 weeks in the wet weather we have had is not a long time for a horse to develop a proper toe callous and for the sole to really thicken.

I would rest her for a few days at least and in the mean time invest in some good hoof boots, they really are money well spent and you will have them for some years if you look after them.

when you say 'around the toe', do you mean in the white line, or in the toe area of the sole?

its the toe area of the sole. its fine everywher else except at the toe its like she has very pale red racing tips on - if that makes sense!

i will try and get some pictures but forgot my phone today

the redness on the tips and soreness, just that the farrier mentioned exactly what you have posted about the other day when we were chatting.

as a precaution i would get them looked at - hopefully it will be nothing to worry about but its best to get it checked xx

Yes laminitics show this sort of redness - its often a bit of an early warning that something is going wrong. In your case though I would think its caused by concussion. I would def rest for a few days
