Is there a way of reducing them? My horse now has 3 although she isn't lame. I'm still riding her gently (walking hacks with a bit of off-road trotting) and I'm cold hosing her legs twice a day. She is also on a joint supplement and wears boots all round when ridden. I think they may have been caused by her knocking her legs or running round the field as we try to avoid work on hard ground. She is still running around the field like an idiot but she fence-walks if split up from the others and stabling her isn't an option so reducing the amount she moves would be tricky. Any suggestions?

Once they are formed they don't usually cause a problem. Regards reducing them I'm afraid I don't know if anything really works? My girl's got one so if you find out about anything I'd be interested.

Does Splintex actually work? They have only formed recently and are quite warm; I was wondering what I can do to reduce any discomfort/swelling - once they've hardened I'm not too bothered.

My horse had one 5 weeks ago and like You I treated with hosing I also restricted his space but not the amount of time turned out.Its almost gone and the only thing I did different was apply cooling gel twice a day.Unfortunately
hes still lame because our mare has just kicked him below the knee on the same leg Im treating that with gel too.The vet was surprised it had gone and asked me what I had been using on it.No promises but could be worth a try.

DMSO completely disappeared my horse's - but it must be applied within the first 30 days. Also used magentic boots on more established splints, and it does reduce them. My vet told me that it increases blood flow to the area, and gradually breaks down the splint.... Not sure if this is the case, but it definately works.
