My horse is currently lame behind (currently undiagnosed) vet is out again today and they have been talking about referring her. I will ask them all the questions later but I just wanted a bit of background knowledge as I have never had a horse referred before.

Do the vets contact the other vets then let me know when she's going or do I need to contact them?
Do I need to tell my insurance company and make sure they are happy about the referral (currently claiming for this) or do the vets do this?
How long can/ do referrals take?

When talking about referring her the vets said cambridge, so I'm assuming that would be Rossdales/ Newmarket?

Mine was referred for a bone scan, my vet rang the other vets to let them know but I then had to ring up the other vets to arrange an appointment. I think I got an appointment within 2 weeks? But it depends what is for etc, definitely tell your insurance company or you might not be covered!

Normally your vet will make the initial call to the referral centre, thereafter you will find the centre either contact you direct to arrange to book your horse in or you vet will tell you who/where to call.

Regarding the insurance - call them yourself to be on the safe side, they will then advise you of their procedure regarding any approvals needed on diagnostics etc.

I've had a horse referred to Rossdales previously. They were very good, the whole process was smooth too regarding referring and insurance claims.

Thank you both.
I will definately phone the insurance company myself (wouldn't want to end up with that bill!)
LouS - the problem is, they don't really know why she's lame or where its coming from, I will ask them later what she's likely to be being referred for.
Really hope it doesn't end up using all the insurance money and not finding an answer :-(
