mare is registered with the KWPN and has an FEI passport.

stallion is graded and approved with the E.S stud book and registered with the KWPN.

vet said i should get her registered with the KWPN but i am a newbie at this so will they send me a passport.

my covering certificate is for Europees Stamboek.

do i also have to send my mares breeding papers away with the covering certificate.

many thanks

If your mare is KWPN registered, her foal is also eligible to be registered with the KWPN. If you DO register your foal with the KWPN you will be sent 2 documents:

1) the first document is a single A4 sheet of paper called the registration paper - this shows all the foal's registration details, her full pedigree and breeder's and owner's names and addresses.
2) second document is the passport which complies with all the EU passport legislation and is fully legal in the UK.

If you want to register your foal with the KWPN you must become a member. The registration process is 2 stage. You first need to inform the KWPN of the covering – usually the stallion owner does this but if they haven't, I would send a letter to the KWPN, telling them your mare is in foal and tell them the date of insemination and enclose the covering certificate and a copy of your mare's registration paper (keep a copy of the covering certificate). They should then send you a form to fill in on the birth of your foal along with the silhouette for the passport and some bags for hair samples for DNA testing. On the birth of the foal you get the vet to fill this in (you'll get instructions on what to do) and send it back to the KWPN. They'll process it and send you your foal's registration paper and passport. I would give them a ring on 0031 341 255555 – they speak English and will be able to help you through it. There's more info on their website too www.kwpn.nl

I am led to understand that the ES is a completely unrecognised studbook -- it certainly isn't a member of the WBFSH, the passports I have seen that have been isued by it are rubbish and it is not to be confused with the AES -- so would those procedures still apply to KWPN and Zang? AFAIK it was formed by some dis-enchanted Freisian breeders and collected a few misguided warmblood breeders along the way so its grading / stallion approval procedures are very suspect and I wouldn't want the OPs hopes of a full set of papers -- or even of KWPN reg B ones :-) -- to be built up because of any confusion over names and WBFSH recognition. Of course, ES doesn't have a recognised diaghter studbook or branch here either of course but that is not the main issue in this case.

Ciss, the OP says the stallion is KWPN registered - he could be graded with the most meanlingless studbook in the world but as long as he is KWPN registered, his foals are also eligible for registration with the KWPN.

I never suggested foalie would be entitled to full KWPN papers but Register B seems a better option than ES, don't you agree?

Yes, sorry hadn't seen the ES part, a total meaningless piece of crap registry who suckered a number of people into paying them good money for toilet paper (which has more worth in fact). They saw the UK market as an ideal place to take advantage of uninformed people.

if you google the ES, you get a gekko stud book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Certainly not to put KWPN down but to be fair *any* registration with a WBFSH studbook that gives verified proof of parentage as part of the passport is better than ES -- and KWPN (reg B or not) or Zang (but I doubt Zang now after Ken's very accurate post :-)) -- seem as good a place to start as any :-)

i spoke to the KWPN. i need to first
be a memberof kwpn,
then send 20 hairs from mare and foal for dna
then send covering certificate
then send mares breeding papers
then send photo of mare and foal ( have 100s)
then send foal markings done by vet
and last send them about 350 euros.
i need help what should i do this is my first and only foal and i want to get it right. who would you all register with thanks

That does sound expensive! we are just in the process of registering a foal with KWPN and have to say they dont make it easy!!! but they havent asked us for that much think bill was 60euros

That is exactly the reason I have decided not to register any of my foals KWPN from now on, you should see my bills from them

I haven't got my bills in yet but last year, it cost me about 200 euros per foal to register it – that included registration of covering, registration of foal & issue of passport as well as DNA testing for both foal and dam.

I would guess the 350 Euros you've been told must include other things too, like the membership fee, one off joining fee, etc. Admittedly its not cheap though I personally think its well worth the cost. The KWPN doesn't just 'sell' paperwork like lots of studbooks, it does so much more - research into OCD, genetics, compilation of indices, etc and it's recognised and respected worldwide.

I won't name any studbooks Ken, but it wasn't a dig at Z.

I just think that sadly quite a few of the 'lesser' sport horse studbooks are in the business of making money out of selling paperwork, rather than genuinely trying to help breeders breed better quality horses.

OK, well I'm not Dutch or have any affiliation with Holland but all my foals are registered with the KWPN - what does that tell you?!

there was a membership fee to the kwpn 90euros, then they wanted 3 dna test fees 46 euros each, a passport fee of 26.50 euros and a registration fee of 40 euros. and on top of that i have to have pay my vet to do the markings. sorry it adds up to approx 300euros but she was quoting me the old prices (2007) on some of the items. the only good thing was they do all the work and i can pay at the end when they send the bill

Hmmm, I'm not sure I would say I enjoy dealing with them but I like their ideals on the role of a studbook and I like their approach to breeding.

Zangersheide charges:

Mares registration - free
membership - 50€ per year
Foal registration - 150€, including DNA test.
Home visit to brand and perform registration and take hair samples - 40-50€, but you don't now need your vet to do it, so there's no vet cost, so essentially you've mitigated that cost.
