When we bought our puppy the breeder told us that the puppys parents are registered but the puppy hasn't been registed yet. So we did know this.
We know the mum and dads KC names, as we have been told.
So how do we go about getting her registered with the KC?
Does the breeder do it or can we do it after we get the pup, now we know the parents names. And how much does it cost?

Breeder has just sent us some updated pics.

Picking her up in 2 weeks time. As she is only 6 weeks at the moment.

The breeder should register them for a cost of £12 Then when you take ownership you will have to have them re registered in to your name forget how much.

The breeder usually does it, if not go on the KC website and you can fill in the Breed Register form. I *think* you can do it online, if not you can definitely download the form.

You will need the parents KC reg number as well as their names.

It was £12 for me to register my JRT on the Activity Register (for dogs that aren't recognised breeds with the KC/aren't registered at all so they can compete at obedience/agility) so I'm assuming it's also £12 to register a puppy - I should know really seeing as we register our litters but its too late as I type to go looking through our folders!

Hope that helps

Thanks. How come the breeder has do it? Sorry being a bit thick here. She couldn't have any objections could she if I offer to send her the money and cover her costs for phone calls and postage?? By me doing this would this mean she would have to do all the puppies or could you just 1. Ours is the only female in the litter.

You would norm register the whole litter but if you do it not the breeder you can reg 1 but I'm not sure how that works because we do litters.

Edit:

She doesn't have to register them if you ask her to as it's not compulsory.

So would I be able to do it say when I got the pup home, if I get the KC numbers aswell as their names? Don't mind at all, just thought Iwouldn't be allowed to do it after I had taken her away from the breeder.

The Breeder can give you a form that you finish completing (your details) and then you send it to the KC. The breeder has to give you signed paperwork to prove the breeding.
Usually, if the breeder has a Prefix, they will register the pups.

As I understand it, it is the duty of the breeder to register the litter with the KC if it is a recognised breed.

Like all registrations, the breeder will have a form to fill in which has been signed by the owner of the sire of the litter (similar to a mare covering certificate) which isn't a problem if they actually own that stud dog too, but if they don't own it, that will need to be collected. Without this, the litter will be unregisterable, so I don't think (but don't know for certain) that you as an owner would be able to do it unless you were just registering for agility/obedience, as someone else said.
I'm not sure how you would go about registering puppies from your own bitch in the future if the bitch wasn't first registered by the breeder as she wouldn't have a verified pedigree.

Why not ring the KC, they're usually very helpful (0870 606 6750)

The breeder has to register the pup, she may not be registering pups for a reason.
Like if her bitch has had a little and it hasnt been 12 months since, then she wont be able to register the litter.
Just a thought.

Or if the bitch is under 1 year old or over 8 years old.

Sorry, I can't really tell from the small pictures...is it a springer?

Personally I'd find it rather suspect if both parents were KC Registered but the breeder wasn't going to register the litter. I can see no reason or advantage for not registering the litter. Chances are they're not registered because they can not be for some reason, for example

Either the sire or dam may not be registered under the correct ownership
The dam has already whelped six litters
The dam has already reached the age of eight years at the date of whelping
The dam was under 12 months of age at the date of mating.
If either the dam or sire are endorsed with progeny not eligible for registration (i.e. that there is a restriction on file at the Kennel Club that prevents any puppies from being registered)

To be honest I'd be looking for a puppy elsewhere.

You say the puppy hasn't been registered YET. Does that mean that the breeder intends to but just hasn't done so yet? If the puppies are only 6 weeks old that is perfectly reasonable. It used to take me longer than that to come up names for mine when I was breeding! If the breeder is not intending to register them then I would be very suspicious for the reasons already given by other people and I would expect the price to reflect this. You puppy looks like a Cavalier, is it? I used to breed and show CKCS so PM me if you like with the name of the breeder (if you're not happy) I'll see what I can find out.

Thanks folks. There are a lot of alarm bells ringing on this one. contacted her to see if she would register the pup for me. And I even offered to pay for it and to cover any expenses she may incur. She told me she couldn't????? I acted a bit thick here and asked why not as I understood that if she was a pedigree she could be registered. She never came back to me. They she must have caught her mobile with my number and rang me by accident. Never spoke but could hear her speaking in the distance to a friends and saying "but what should I say if she asks this" and the conversation went on and I won't say anymore on here. But sound like a story was being invented to me. So although I haven't told her yet. It looks too suspicious to me what does everyone else think. And although I will lose my deposit I am prepared to do this under the circumstances. Thanks again.

Sounds as if this pup comes from unregistered parents ....not a problem unless :

a) it was advertised as KC reg - in which case this is fraud

b) you intended to breed from her - as the pups themselves would not then be registerable with the KC

c) you intend to show her at anything other than companion shows.

The breeder of the litter has to sign the registration forms so you would not be able to register her yourself ....it all sounds a little suspect to me

Long time since I registered a litter but could the breeder have meant the litter had been registered? You get litter registration to give details of the whole litter then if you want to take it further you register the individual puppies (I think!)
