Yes I know, it is humiliating and embarrasing, but it has to be done...

Does anyone (or has anyone) used boots for their dogs?

My two really do hate the snow/ice, I had to come back early from their walk today as they were so miserable and that was going through the woods with nice leaf mulch on the floor

So I suppose I shall have to consider a solution for them, and no-one is replying on the Hound Lounge when I have asked about boots for greyhounds

I wish I just had normal dogs

I know, I know, I have never had this with any of my other greyhounds

Yes I saw that, but they dont get ice balls at all as not enough hair on their feet

They just limp along like old ladies on a shingle beach

Which boots do yours have? The link went through to the main site, not a particular kind of boot.

I have chosen the wrong time of year of course, as they are closed until New Year now, but at least I can have some in ready for the next lot of snow

I was being polite!

Ive just had a cracking idea what about some slipper socks?? You could pull them up and secure them with a bit of vet wrap?? colour co-ordinating of course!!

I was just going to suggest that she sent you a pm, because the only dogs I've seen with boots that stays up in snow is some dogs in sled competitions. Edited away a question about the link, my computer must have played me a trick.

Dont worry i do horrible things to my animals, just last week Katie had on a pair of Primark legwarmers when the farrier came much to his amusement!! lol

My lot have the cordura boots normally only wear them on front paws for protection but the hounds could have them for all four pawseys

Prose does, I think, for Stella? Maybe our Canadian contingent too

Did you see Emma suggested Vaseline for the paws?

[/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely we use them. It's far colder in New York and Connecticut than it is in England. Stella screams if the ice is too cold, and she screams louder if she walks through salt for a long enough period of time. Despite their city of birth, Bostons are not cold weather dogs and Stella was miserable the first winter of her life, and simply would not walk anywhere.

I would invest in the ones most dogs will wear--Pawz--or maybe a jar of Musher's Wax if you feel too silly to parade your dogs in boots.

Edited to say: There is another, quite sad reason I put boots on Stella. This happens maybe two or three times during any given winter in NYC

Thats fab I shall order them now - thanks again Cyrus, the girlies may look a little silly

No problem my love, if they dont like them use some Mushers wax as Prose mentioned or we use a tub of paw wax from PAH keeps there pads from cracking etc from the cold weather x

My kids dressed our two muts up in knickers and tights. What happens next? Some idiot left the gate open and cue two dressed dogs racing around. The smaller one came back minus his pants and tights!!!

Pmsl! I'm sorry I made this suggestion Splotch...I never ment for you to have to suffer public humiliation on hho asking about them!
tongue.gif

Seriously though... I'm sure the girlies will be very happy back out walking with warm, non stingy little puddies! Bless them!

Isn't it just? This similar story is from Toronto, and the article talks about humans wearing rubber-soled shoes, therefore lessening the chances of electrocution from metal grates. When it's a slushy, salty mess, like today, I don't walk Stella without her boots.

If you can't get the size you need you can make your own out of a pair of old jeans! Just cut two ovals sew round leaving the top open, bit like a jewellery drawstring bag shape, then attach some velcro round the top to secure, but if you have my phobia for sewing, buy some!!!!

Many apologies for hijacking the thread, but Prosefullstop, how do you do that link thing (instead of the usual lengthy link, you magically make real, meaningful words appear)?

[/ QUOTE ]

When you click on URL, a text box appears, asking you to enter the URL of the website, after which a second text box appears, into which you enter those "real, meaningful words."

We sometimes use boots on our huskies who we work a lot in harness. They don't need them the vast majority of the time. The ones we have are made of cordura and have velcro fastenings. You can also get them made from fleece but they are for running on 'proper' snow.

We got ours from the States when we were over (Alaska) and they were about $1.50 a pair - we have a huge bucket of them! On the trail surfaces up here they last maybe a run or two, but that's anything from 4-10 miles at a fast speed and pulling hard, so they'd last a lot longer for general walking. You can buy them over here from a few places, try Culpeppers. The dogs lift their legs up (like when you put travelling boots on Horses and they first move!) a bit to start with but soon forget they are on when they run.
