am considering using this this year after years of tolerating/managing my mares behaviour without.
can anyone who has used it explain exactly how they used it.
when? how? how often? cost??? effectiveness?

thanks
Perce

Only used it once when trying to get my mare cycling fulling to get in foal, she was tranisionally cycling, so vet put her on regumate to take her completely out of season, then after a period brought her off it, she was then jabbed to come into season.

I believe it affects the progesterone levels keeping the mare out of season. It is very expensive and for long term use, you'd need to speak to your vet.

It was given in a syringe down her throat daily and it's not to be used by anyone who maybe pregnant.

I found it useful on my young mare in Sept as she seemed to be in season the whole time is expensive I think it was £34 for 10 days treatment, but I put it in her food, has helped as she's never been like this before, but vet did say many mares having the same problem, as it came very mild

Some mares are total cowbags when in season. Regumate stops them coming into season!

It's always worth trying with 'moody' mares - and if it works - you can then explore inserting a marble into the uterus (which kids many mares into thinking they are in foal!) The marble doesn't work with all - and some can 'lose' it - but as a longer term solution it is probably cheaper than Regumate - and means you don't have to handle Regumate constantly (Regumate can be absorbed through the skin and should NEVER be handled by anyone who is - or might be - pregnant!!) You also have to be particularly careful if you have competition horses as the slightest bit of contaminastion can return a positive blood test - and it is a banned substance for stallions or geldings!!

The cost is between £115 and £170 per litre (depending on where you get it - cheaper online but you need a vet's prescription!) An average dose for a 16.2 mare would be 13 ml per day - so a litre would last about 10 weeks.

my mare has quite serious behavioural issues when in season and i have managed aorund them since i backed her at 4. she is now 10.
she has improved massively with age but still shows the potential to explode and buck 'like stink' if she is pee'd off . to the extent that i tend to dismount before she dumps me - rather irritating and inconvenient when in the iddle of a sj clinic for example.
i have discussed this wth the vet and we have agreed that this year we start with regumate and move onto a marble if that does not do the trick,

So does regulate get given for a limited time or for the entire year?
is it given orally each day? in food? or directly into her mouth with a syringe?
what is the effect on behaviour? anyone have a mare who gets assertively 'bucky' - ie. uses it as a threat to stop you askeing her to do something she doesn;t fancy. if so, did regumate calm her, stop this behaviour.

i get the impression this is going to be very expensive and need to be sure it is the right thing to do.

any replies appreciated.
thanks

Most mares are ok given it from March to November - as many mares go into anoestrus for the winter. It can be given in food - or syringed into her mouth if she doesn't like the taste (I've never had trouble with mares rejecting feed because of it.) I should add that I use it with the odd mare who won't hold a pregnancy rather than for behavioural issues.

The ONLY thing it does is stop her coming into season - so it only works if she is ill-behaved when in season (and ok in-between.) If she's 'difficult' all the time, then Regumate won't help.

I always suggest to people with difficult mares that they keep a day-to-day diary of the behaviour - good and bad. If the bad behaviour is about 1 week in 3, then you can be confident it's related to her cycle - and in that case, Regumate would work.
