Hi,

My horse has horrendous feet. They have huge cracks in them and she has now lost 3 shoes in 2 weeks each time a chunk of hoof wall has come off with the shoe. She does not show any signs of lameness when a shoe goes missing, although I don't ride her until the farriers been.

I was advised to use Cornucrescine and have been doing so for 2 months now.

I've had her 7 months and her feet are getting worse.

I am aware that some people may suggest her going bare foot but I'm unsure if she'd be too old (16) and I know that last year when her rear shoes were removed she got an abscess. I am also wary that I've only just got her to a position where she can be regularly ridden again and don't want to take a step back by being unable to continue her riding.

Any advice anyone??

I pulled Obi's shoes when he was 17. That was nearly ten years ago :).

What is her diet?

Get some pics of her hooves (side and front view from the ground and a sole view).

And we'll see what we can do for you :).

What does you vet think?? That is the first advice.

then without going into detail I would:

  1. look into her diet make sure the diet is correct- again I would find some one you know and trust and is knowledgeable and knows your horse well to say what she needs. No one on here knows the horse and cannot give adequate diet. As we don't know what her work load is or type of work- how often hacking etc.
  2. choose a good supplement
  3. make sure the farrier is doing a good job with the trimming and shoeing
  4. don't leave it too long between shoeing, so the shoe gets loose and is more likely to come of off
  5. look into the type of shoes and see if there are adjustments there
  6. speak to your farrier about glue on shoes these are less likely to come off and rip the hoof even more.

You will get a lot of conflicting advice but these ^ are the main headings IMO.

If you choose to put pictures up you will get a lot of comments good and bad

Are you feeding biotin? It's the cheapest and the best way of encouraging horn growth, if she really won't keep shoes on, and it's jeapordising her feet you could talk to you're farrier about having her shoes glued, or even rebuilt using acrylic- downsides are it can be expensive though and they MUST be turned out with over reachers ( if she takes off an acrylic shoe a large amount of foot will be removed too)

I would post this in new lounge possibly with photos.... I've had a similar problems with back shoes after and abscess so I've taken the back shoes off. Changed his diet to low sugar and high fibre with hoof supplements and micronised linseed.I've also invested in some hoof boots.

Thanks for your comments. The farrier is coming in the morning to do all her feet but I have a very early meeting so the yard owner is holding her for me.

The farrier says that her hooves are weak from months and months since.

I will post some pics onto the lounge topic when I can get some.
