Having a few 'mare' issues with Wiggy, not riding - wise but in the stable at shows and on the lorry, where she is using up a heap of energy via PMT!!!!

I'm not a fan of regumate, but this is disturbing not only her own rhythm, but the 'lads' are finding it all a bit off-putting too!

So.......... alternatives? Anyone? Or should I venture off to the more intellectual recesses of this forum?

A lot deepends if you intend breeding from her in future. If you do long term use of regumate will become a problem.
If you dont want to breed then removing the ovaries is an option you would need to use regumate first to be sure that removing the ovaries will achieve the result you want.

Marbles? Sterilised marble into the uterus, can stimulate the effects of early pregnancy in some mares and so they become more 'yummy mummy' and less 'Touch me and I'll kill you'

Can also be removed without too much hassle if you want her to become a real yummy mummy

I had a mare that was a REAL COW! Put her on Regumate and she was a pussy cat. So vet took out her ovaries. Initially I thought this extreme but he explained her problem was due to real pain when she was ovulating and not just being a cow. No huge operation, no general anesthetic, just heavy sedation whilst still standing and they took them out through her back end not through flanks. One quiet week off and she was 100%

Absolute pussy cat the whole time, a much happier horse and much less stressed

Thanks everyone!
The breeding element is still too important over here, and I'm sure we,or whoever ends up with Wiggy will want to breed from her. So,because OH thinks that the 'marbles idea' seems a bit 'sex-toy' pervie! I'll be trying some Oestress, anyone know the web address?
Ta!

2nd the frisky mare plus. Vet suggested ovarian removal for my welsh A but I do hope to breed from her one day. Regumate was way too expensive option for long term use so tried various supplememts before firsky mare and was amazed at the results. She was unrideable (would throw herself on the ground with jockey on!), difficult on the ground and a complete tart. She is now in full work and a lovely person!

have had great success with a few mareish mares using silver lining herbs uk products, they are extremely helpful and look at the reason behind it rather than just treat the immediate symptoms. good luck

If Oestress doesn't work for you, have a try with one of the Hilton Herbs products, or Global Herbs or whatever. All the formulas are different, plus I know someone who swears by something homeopathic for her mare. I agree that Regumate is a bit too strong (and expensive) plus we definitely want to breed from our mares eventually.

Hi, my mare was so distressed with her seasons last year, she would flash and squirt at anything and almost sit on a horse if we were hacking out with someone else. She used to bang her pelvis against the stable wall and in one instance we had to have the vet as the discomfort from her ovaries gave her a mild colic. After trying Oestress, frisky mare, and stroppy mare, I was advised by my vet, to put her on Regumate. We decided to wait til this spring before we made our decision, but after her coming into season and getting umcomfortable on Christmas Day! we decided that at the first sign of her showing discomfort, we would put her on Regumate. She has been on it now for about a month, and she is so chilled and she is a pleasure to ride, she is like a normal horse. Her seasons weren`t regular tho, she seemed to have a mild week, then it would start all over again so that is why we decided on it.
The vet has said that if she is better on the Regumate, then we know that it is definately the ovaries, and they will look into inserting the marbles next year so she isnt on Regumate indefinately.
So as for the herbs and other supplements, it is what suits each horse, the same as everything really.
Good Luck.

I didn't take vets advice of putting my mare on regumate becuase it was clear she was in pain when in season and she was a nightmare constantly and i thought there was an underlying problem not just her being mare-ish. I took her into Leahurst for a scan and turned out she had an inflamed lining of the womb which was treated by inserting a catheta (sp?) and me administering strong antibiotics twice a day for 3 days. Now my mare is a dream, can't even tell when shes in season anymore except she is just a bit spookier when ridden but from being ran into walls, barbed wire, bucked and broncoed i think its an improvement

Could be worth looking to see if there is an underlying problem or if it is just hormonal
