I am having one of my mares scanned this morning as every so often (last happened 2 months ago, before that 1 month previous) she gets really tight and uncomfortable in her back. When I am rising she will work forwards, albeit a little relunctantly, but as soon as I go sitting she humps her back against me, bucks and is generally really horrible to ride.

I have kept a record of the times she does this, and there is definitely a 'cycle' so we are beginning to wonder whether it could be related to either her hormones or her ovaries being uncomfortable. The difficult thing is that I very rarely see her in season...

We decided to scan her ovaries this morning to see whether there is anything unusual going on in there, but if not we are going to try her on a month or two of Regumate to see whether that breaks the cycle of this horrendous behaviour (she feels like she simply shuts down on you and ignores you totally while humping her back, really swishing her tail and her ears are back).

Has anyone used it with success for difficult ridden behaviour at times of ovulation or prior to ovulation?

Yes, have a friend who swears by it, and has been using it for about 3 years. It isn't cheap and someone said it can affect fertility later, so you may want to check that with vet.

You probably already know about the marble in the womb which can be an alternative.

A friend of mine had her show jumper on it for at least 4 yrs because of similar behaviour. She was then found to have a tumour on her ovary. The ovary was removed and she was put in foal this year (caught 1st covering so I don't know if it does affect their fertility)

Thanks memo... Did your friend find it helped?

That is why I had her scanned before using the Regumate, I wanted to be 100% sure there was nothing untowards in there

Our advanced eventer mare aged 14 who retired this year had used it with success throughout her competitive career which included YR squad. She was on it for a trip to Portugal February/March 2009 but for unconnected reasons retired in April. She is now in foal! No difficulties whatever, at any stage.

I hope this helps
