We bought 6 yr old mare last winter, sweetest pony ever, had been backed last year af+er breeding a couple of foals, she recently had her 1st season with us and became unrideable. She would constantly buck, teeth, tack and back all checked and fine. Spoke with vet who has suggested regumate, but i am confused because having read up on it it looks like it can only be given for 15 days then you have to have a break which means a season, does anyone know if it can be used to prevent seasons for a few consecutive months? thanks

I think you would need to ask your vet. I have known people who compete and they tried to get the routine right to make sure they are not on their 'off' week for the event. I think if you can take it continually then they would probalbly have done it.

Right! Question 1. How was she after her first season - back to her normal loveable self?? If so,there is a chance that: 1) it was transitional oestrus (which is usually 'fiercer') or 2) that she had a persistent (haemorrhagic) follicle - and they can be painful.

If it was 1. - or 2 -chances are she will be ok on her next season. If she's NOT,and her bad behaviour is purely hormonal, then Regumate will work and you CAN keep her on it throughout the breeding season. (Some breeders keep mares on it for the first 100 days or more of a pregnancy - and MANY competition/show mares are kept on it from March to November!) The 14 days of use is when it's being used to regulate/synchronise seasons in brood mares before covering!

However, IF her bad behaviour continued for more than about 8 days (the maximum time she's likely to remain in oestrus), then I would want to get her ovaries scanned before spending a fortune on Regumate. Might be something amiss there that can be treated more effectively than just bunging her on Regumate. And if you decide Regumate IS the best option, ask your vet if he willsupply porcine regumate (FAR cheaper!)

janetgeorge, thanks for that info it is very helpful, hopefully she will be ok now then. can i expect that she may be like this her first season every year?

some mares are worse in their first season of the year.

I would get her scanned as suggested by Janet, just to ensure her ovaries are ok.

It is also possible that if the vet recommends regumate as a long term treatment (spring-autumn) that your insurance may pay for the regumate for the first year.
