Regumate or Improvac?

Hi All,

I have a lovely 5 year old mare, who i have had since an unhandled 3 year old. She is not mareish at all, she loves cuddles and is generally genuine, loves her work and tries hard (she can be anxious hacking, but i am working on this with someone else, and is a different issue).

Anyway, i have had her on all sorts of hormone supplements, she is currently on agnus castus and frisky mare plus but i am looking at going down the vet route to help with her seasons. She doesn't get nasty or grumpy, the main issue is ridden and away from home. A few weeks ago, we went to a hunter trial (she is usually really good away from home), we travelled with a friend and in the warm up, my mare turned into a rodeo horse! Broncing and rearing, which isn't like her at all. I made the decision to get off (i suffered a nasty accident in January which resulted in me fracturing my eye socket, nose and cheekbone and now i am slightly bionic!), i lunged her and then called it a day. She was in season!

The 3 weeks after, we went out and cannot fault her. We did our first ODE at the same venue, and she was brilliant. Saturday, we went XC schooling, and she is currently in season and she was a bit of a madam. Not really focused on the job at hand, and i couldn't get her focused or listening to me, so we called it a day. Call me a wimp or a failure, i don't care. I suffer with PTSD and have self preservation, i also know my horse. At home, she has worked beautifully. She has her saddle and back checked regularly (saddles were done a week ago and back was done Thursday, so that isn't issue, it is hormone related).

I am looking at getting my vet out to discuss my options, Regumate or Improvac. If she needs to be scanned, then obviously we can go down that route as the insurance would cover it. I am looking at Pros and Cons for each.

Is it worth getting the vet out now, or am I better to leave it until the new year? Do you keep them on Regumate all year round? How much does it cost? I understand there is currently a problem getting Regumate online due to stock shortages, which isn't ideal.

I would potentially like the option to breed from her in the future, but at the end of the day I bought her to be a competition horse and it isn't a great feeling sat on a bomb that is ready to explode every 3 weeks! lol. Thanks

I would get a vet out now especially as her behaviour has changed considerably and you don't want to be putting yourself at risk riding her like that.

My friend uses regumate on one of her daughters show ponies as she was being nappy around season time and seemed to be worse when at a show, it has really made a difference she hasn't had one of her episodes since being on it all summer, I believe she is hoping to stop giving it over the winter and then start again in the spring.

Stocks were low but they have a pig version that is the same thing so vets were using that instead and my friend never had trouble getting it.

I have the vet booked to come hopefully this week. It is so frustrating as usually she doesn't care about other horses, turns out fine on her own, but then the hormones hit and cause havoc! I was hoping it would settle down a bit the older she got, but just seems to get worse.

I definitely feel this is the right route to go down, for my safety if nothing else. My previous mare was a madam when in season, but mainly just squirting and being a tart and she was a grumpy bugger most of the time! My 5 year old is a real softy and turns into a nightmare when in season!

Improvac doesn’t work for every mare and also if you might consider breeding in the future, the vet will probably advise against it.
