My 18 year old mare has always had frequent cycles even through winter, I've had enough of it now (the screaming, mess, p'ing all over the yard and being a pain to ride)

I think my best course of action is to run her down to the vet to be scanned/checked out.

If all is well, what would be best, any advice etc please.

Have a marble or put her on regumate. I have done a little research (no expert!) into both so i know roughly what they do/supposed to do etc, but some advice on people that know would be really appreciated.

I wasnt keen on regumate due to the price & handling complications, however have read marbles can be 'ejected'

and need regular replacement etc? so I wouldve thought costly also for regular vet trips.

Marble definately helped me, cost £35 ish. No need for regular vet trips, once thought it had fallen out when it hadn't, would usually have it taken out in November & reinserted in ariund March. Much cheaper than Regumate & no mucking about handling that stuff.

My vet sugests a course of regumate, to see if it works, if it does go for the marble.
Just make sure the vet dosnt use 2. I've heard of one mare that regularly ejected the marble, so the vets put 2 in, and they smashed together! I believe this mare had quite a few foals, and couldnt get preggers again, so her muscles may have been rather slack
Other than that one case, I've not heard of any problems with marbles and they tend to stay in, without any trouble.

I have a similar problem and have had my mare blood tested and scanned as the vet thought she may have a benign tumour. All results came back normal. Vet has said to try regumate at the first sign of her coming into season. We discussed the marble but he said they only work in 50% of cases and to try the regumate first. He said he has seen good results from regumate.

Personally I would try the cheapest option first, if the marble doesn't work then you could look at something else. I have also used the injection with success, & still cheaper than Regumate, which is perhaps why some vets are so keen to prescribe it.

My mare was on regumate from April - Oct last year.

She started cycling early Jan this year so after she tried to remove my head last week I talked to the vets.

She had started the squealing and peeing on the Fri, the following Thurs was scanned, still not ovulated (cervix needs to be open).

Took her to vets today scanned, she had ovulated and cervix was bigger.
Just about managed to squeeze marble in.
She was mildly sedated and in stocks, OK to travel after half hour.

If it works far less hassle than regumate.

I'm wondering if my mare has expelled her marble.
She had it put in last year - regumate had worked well but with other horses on the yard competing at high levels (and in one case FEI) we were concerned about the risk of contamination.
Last summer, although she was still showing to geldings (and rather dramatically to the YO's 3yo colt), she was much easier to handle and ride.
She has just come into season for the second time this year (the first was in January during the big freeze!) and is agressive and tricky to handle and getting very cross with the mare that lives next door to her - there are FIVE mares all in a row in our stable block and it is hormone hell at the mo!
She's also objecting to the leg, which is making schooling her difficult.
Before the marble was put in, she was scanned and manually examined and the vet confirmed her ovaries are normal.
Any ideas ?- not keen on more supplements unless they are exceptionally good, as she's already on one for her breathing.
