My vet has agreed to try my mare on regumate. He’s giving me a 10 day trial course, said to start giving it a few days before her season start..

I’m trying to work out when to start her on it.

She was squirting over other mares on 5th May and for a few days after. Looking online it seems before squirting they come into ‘season’ 5 days before so with this in mind, is it best to start giving regumate around 29-31st May?

I fed it continuously from spring to autumn. From memory it took a couple of weeks to start to have an effect at which stage we lowered the dosage.

My mare had been a broodmare for a long time and was pretty disgusting when in season and pretty much always in season if in a ten mile radius of a colt of stallion. it worked well for her.

Also have only ever used it continuously- might be worth asking the vet whether there would be any harm in that? I’m guessing cost-wise, there’s an advantage to being more targeted with it!

Have you any reason to think the mare’s cycle might be irregular? Might be challenging to target if so?

I’ve recently started one of my mares on it. I didn’t give any consideration to timing of start just gave it to her and intend to go a good 6 weeks continuously to test the effects

Sorry, thought of said. The plan is 10 days to test.. then buy a big bottle of pig regumate which lasts 4 months but is £130 approx so he thought 10 days would be worth testing first.

He said to start it just before her season.. but I don’t actually know when that will be! 😣
