I've got a mare thats really difficult to handle when she's in season. I've had her on oestress which has made no difference at all so i'm wondering about other options. She's the sweetest mare ever when she's not in season and so easy to handle but when she does come into season she's plants herself constantly and no amount of coaxing or shouting will get her to move, means it can take 15 mins to get her to the field and up again at night! She also crushes you against walls, which can verge on dangerous as she will not move away and also change rugs and general handling is difficult.

She never nasty though it's just like she doesn't realise her own strength and she's rather distant but she'll last like this for 10 days which is a long time when daily tasks become an ordeal! She's currently off work injuried but eventually i hope to get back on her and working her will be impossible when she's in season. We had a vet to see her for her injury and she happened to be in season then, he suggested regumate. I've heard it's expensive but never seen exactly how much it is? Would you reccommend regumate or should we try another type of herbal supplement?

As I've just replied to you on the other forum, it's not a banned substance under FEI rules
 
Friend gave regumate to a mare of hers one summer and really helped her. Interestingly she hasn't needed it again... Been fine ever since....
 
Regumate is rather pricey but effective. However there are safety concerns for anyone handling it. It is a serious hormone drug so you would need to be very careful that pregnant woman or those thinking of having children do not come into contact with it. This applies also to children, dogs and wildlife. You will need seperate bowls and mixing spoons for the mare so you dont contaminate any other horses feeds.

Speak to your vet some more about it. The last time I used it on a mare it worked out at about £1 per day and I used it for about 8 months of the year.
 
Thats really interesting, Ihave a mare who has in the last three weeks been showing in season with no breaks in that time and has also suddenly stopped jumping!!! I am also considering regumate as I think there is a link between the sudden change in attitude and her wierd hormones, but I was told it was very expensive???
 
It is VERY exepnsive! My friend bought a huge pot for about £100 and it only lasted about 3 months! But it was definitly worth it!

She also got the advise about making sure you don't touch it etc... You have to wear gloves etc when measuring out.
 
OH has a mare that had polycystic overies and was really stroppy and difficult to handle - standing still, squashing people, the lot. Vet scanned her overies and gave her an injection of something to help with the problem, then put her onto Regumate for one summer, problem not completely solved but definately better. Tried Oestress, Moody mare and the like but Reguate was definately the most effective. I gather pig Regumate is cheaper and just as effective but in our case the insurance paid for the lot.

I would second all of the above - please be careful.
 
The other option is to ask your vet about inserting a marble into your mares cervix, it simulates pregnancy & stops them coming into season, you have it taken out in the winter, it is relatively cheap, mine was £35 + sedation & side effect free. I am yet to test the effect in the ring, where we experience our problems, as she has been off lame. However it is common practice in racing & sj with good results.
 
I've just started my mare on Regumate, and I can't believe the difference in her. Not only handling wise, but riding as well. She is so much more eager and happier in her work and she's come on in leaps and bounds. Although a 1ltr bottle will last her only 3 months and cost's about £140.00 I think it's totally worth every penny as she is happy and comfortable! I did try oestress and calmers last summer, and they probabaly cost about as much as the regumate when you add it all up, but had little or no afferct on her at all!

I'm new to this, but thought I'd put my two pennies in.... My (chesnut) mare starting showing 'marish' tendancies about 6 months ago. She was snappy to rug up, girth and bared her teeth when you went into her stable. She would lunge, but not actually bite, infact she knew she'd done wrong, as she would immediately retreat (without ever being hit I may add!) Fabulous to ride and would follow me around the school after work - just very different in the stable/yard!
I started her on nupafeed - after having much success with my nervous gelding. It made absolutely no difference. I then put her on regumate (my vet pescribed the porcine/pig one - which is cheaper than the equine) and noticed a difference within 3 wks.
She is still territorial in her stable, but much better. She has since been turned away for 2 months (as I had an operation and she is only just 5) and I am hopeful, she may not need to go back on it.
I got my vet to write me a pescription and bought it online, think it was about £90 for 2 cannisters.
The insertion of the marble can be risky - as there is a chance of infection, your vet would have an opinion.
Regumate is worth a try and completely legal under FEI.

Sorry, yes forgot to say there is a small chance of infection with the marble option, however I decided that the risk was outweighed by the advantages.
 
thanks for all your opinions!! Had a vet out to remove my mares staples from her op and vet was shocked at how bad she is in season and said we must get her on regumate as we're wasting our time with her as you can't do a thing with her whilst she's in season.

Does anyone know how much the pig verson of regumate is?
