Hi there

Has anyone any experience of using rehabilitation livery, either after surgery, or for longer term injuries such as tendons etc? leaving the horse at the vets will be ridiculously expensive, and I wondered if there are any alternatives?

How much do you usually have to pay, and can anyone recommend any good yards in the Glos or Wilts area?

We used it after Jesper was diagnosed with PSD. He had three months box rest followed by six weeks controlled walked. He was only young and wasn't safe to walk. We sent him to Michelle Hill (married to the dentist Colin Hill). Insurance paid half the costs. He went on the horse walker twice a day and was well looked after. I think he stayed with her for two or three weeks but I honestly can't remember.
Worth asking your vets, I think they recommended her to us.

there's a brilliant one in Shropshire but I expect it is too far for you, Taylored Equestrian. Lovely people and fab facilities.

I do rehab livery and used to do it when I lived in England. I get practically all my clients on referral from the vet, so your vet will probably be able to recommend someone in your area.

The most important thing to ensure is that the yard really does do what it is meant to be doing. Depending on the problem, rehab is often even more important than the veterinary treatment the horse has had, but I know a number of yards where they are quite happy to charge you for the care but don't actually do everything they should.

After 6 months boxrest, my vet wanted my mare to use a horsewalker for a month, and as my yard did not have one, I sent my mare to Oakleaze Stud in Bristol, (www.oakleazefarm.co.uk).
Because I lived very close by I was able to keep her on half livery and did her in the mornings, and the yardowners put her on the walker twice a day and mucked/fed in the evenings. I don't know what their full livery costs would be, but if you are interested I would recommend ringing them to discuss your requirements, as I think costs would depend on exactly what and how much care/nursing your horse would require. They are lovely people and took great care of my mare, who seems to be well on the way to full recovery.

A horse of mine had to go on rehabilitation livery as he was getting too dangerous to walk in-hand and needed daily use of a horse walker. He was there 3 months and they also lunged him in various contraptions to build up his wasted muscle groups in turn, and then they brought him back into ridden work. They also had suitable fields for rehab, which the ones at my livery yard certainly weren't.

The question you wanted to know was how much. I'm sure they vary, but this was full livery with extra services and facilities, and it cost £500 a month

Thankfully the horse recovered, although we didn't keep him, he went to an owner better able to manage him as my 13-year old daughter had found herself overhorsed before his injury, and we would have sold him, but then this happened and I felt I owed it to him to try and see him through it. He was a very sweet boy.

I've not used rehab livery myself but have been to Taylored Equestrians yard and it is a fab set up. The owner comes on here sometimes under the user name TayloredEquestrian (theres a surprise

), even if Shropshire is too far away from you she might be able to put you in touch with somewhere more local.

As a rough idea, we charge £20 per day, plus VAT, this includes recuperation levels of Baileys hard feed (set by one of their qualified nutrionists), hay/haylage, bedded on nedz bed with sealed rubber mats underneath and a session on our oval horsewalker (extra session £2.50 per half hour). We also have cameras so that the owners can log in via the internet and watch their horses in their stables to give them piece of mind.

We also have 12 equine vets located 2 miles from us to monitor horses if necessary.

For a tendon injury we also have a hydrotherapy spa, however in this instance we would recommend regular scans to be sure that the spa/walk work were on track.

If you would like any more info please don't hesistate to PM me.

I hope this isn't seen as advertising but the OP has asked about prices and this is to explain what we include for the money.

i can also recommend Taylored Equestrian. A nimber of my horses have been there and have recievd fab care and attaention. Shropshire isnt that far away from wilts/glous
