My brother had a collie that he had asked his mother in law to look after while he organised him to be neutered as their other male was fighting with him and has now since then been neutered but his Mother in law gave the dog away the same day and refuses to say where. It has now been 3 months and he wants his dog back and has done since the day he was given away. Does anyone have any idea what he can do?

Nothing unless his mother in law tells him where the dog is ! Suppose could try facebook if he has a picture but I doubt any good would come of it.

Yeah I think it might be a case of leaving it be. He's very upset and doesn't stop going on about his dog but I don't think after this long that it would be very fair on the family that paid to get him neutered and have cared for him. I think he would just be happy now knowing where the dog is. Iv seen him being walked locally and he does look healthy and happy. Just I wouldn't dream of approaching people I don't know to ask how the dog is doing. He's a very recognisable dog. One blue eye one brown eye and the markings.

Yes he is chipped to my brothers name and address. All of the animals are chipped. Our parents have been strong believers in chipping because they lost a dog about 10 years ago and when they eventually found out what had happened to him after 5 years of not knowing he had a new family and there was nothing we could do. But the fact that my brothers dog was away from his house for a whole 2 hours before being rehomed, it has been discovered today that his mother in law had been planning to rehome the dog for weeks. Sadly she will not tell us where he is even though we have a rough idea from where he gets walked. My brother has said he misses him and just wants to cuddle his best friend. It's a shame I feel so sorry for him. He's got 3 kids asking where their dog is too! :( my niece and nephews just don't understand even though my brothers wife has said he is away to a new home. honestly don't know what to do or anything.

All very strange. What made her do that? I think it wouldn't be fair on the dog or the new owners to uproot it three months later. He should have perhaps taken legal action at the time to chase it up. Time to move on.

I would call the chip provider and ask has anyone tried to change the details and put a stop/alert on them being changed in future. If changed ask chip company to contact new owner and make them aware and give them a chance to contact your brother.

This was my thinking.

How exactly are we a strange family? Did not come on here to be judged and insulted. Please take this into account when replying. The fact here is that I was asking for advice which for the most part I got. I have said to my brother that he should ask to visit the dog but leave him where he is as he's been uprooted enough which he agrees.
