I'm an experienced rider/horse owner and my dream is to re-home an ex-racer with a view to doing dressage, fun rides and a bit of jumping but probably not particularly competitively.

I've had a TB before but he hadn't raced so i'm looking for success or non success stories. Ideally I would like to re-home through a sanctuary and get one that preferably isn't straight off the track.

I look forward to your replies!

My friend got her TB from The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre (TRC) in Lancashire. She's had him years and years, knew all his quirks before she got him and had plenty of support from them. They visit to check he's doing well.

Edited to add: He's on loan and always will be.

I looked at their site but a friend said she doesn't think they would rehome to Surrey as too far away. Anyone know if this is the case?

I'll second the TRC, sounds like exactly the kind of place you are after. All of the horses have been through some sort of individual rehabilitation programme and they will match you to a horse.

Yes, this horse is in Essex. Admittedly she wasn't so far South when she got him but they weren't concerned when she relocated. One thing I think the TRC do insist on though is turnout.

At work we have one going for free...
took him to W.H at the weekend and he was really good. I am afraid if he doesn't go soon I will end up keeping him for myself! :/

I take mine home from work so know then inside out before I start so that is a bonus.

Nothing is more rewarding than spending the time and patience reschooling one to do the job you want to do.

I have one from there too, well he is the sisters but we all love him, we are in bedfordshire. They will rehome anywhere in England as long as you pass the application process.

Thoroughbreds never really took my fancy, but I got offered an OTTB, I fell in love with him and have not looked back since. He doesn't really like the company of other thoroughbreds, he much prefers the company of my Cobs! I must say they are the best horses ever. After having no real love and attention, once they get it they love it and will do anything for you! Plus you get the satisfaction of knowing you helped a horse in need. I would do it again any day.
