I haven't posted in AAD before so I'm hoping this is the kind of thing I'm allowed to ask...

At the beginning of September, we will finally be in a position to have a dog! OH is going to be working from home so will be around during the day instead of us both being out 7.30am - 5.30pm.

We'd like to have a rescue to start with and hopefully introduce a Schnauzer puppy in a year or two. I've been keeping an eye on the Dogs Trust website and we've been to their West Calder site to say hello and fill out paperwork. Their Glasgow branch is actually closer but we were passing West Calder so popped in.

I'm wondering if there were any other places we could be looking. I'm not sure how I feel about the SSPCA, given some of the things I've read about the RSPCA... Does anyone know anything (good or bad!) about Edinburgh Cats and Dogs home as well? We could travel that way if worth it... Any other help would be much appreciated.

Not used them myself but Anything Dog’il Do rescue... there’s also Blue Cross in Cardonald and I think a SSPCA place in that area.

I had a bad experience with Dogs Trust glasgow branch so won’t be going back anytime soon.

I’d try and find a smaller local rescue if you can but that’s because I’ve had better experiences with them.

I’ve not had great experiences with dogs trust both personally and with dogs I’ve met (like homing a high prey drive ex racing greyhound to first time owners without a muzzle/telling them to muzzle him in public etc.
 
As has been said the RSPCA and SSPCA are nothing to do with one another. I have had two dogs from the SSPCA at Milton, Dumbarton but it was a long time ago. BiL had a dog from Cardonald and they were very good when it wouldn't settle and took it back. I also often see ads in our vets so it could be worth asking local practices if they hear of anything.
 
I have a lot of time for the EDCH-I've not rescued from there but I did used to board one dog I had who was very troubled there and they were great with him. I know two other dogs rehired from there who have been great family dogs. When I was last looking though, they hadn't anything suitable for a rural home-mainly a lot of staffie/bull dog cross types that had issues with other dogs (which is now on my 'no' list).

DT I didn't enjoy dealing with and would sooner go SSPCA.

I had a great experience with The Dog Aid Society -got a fabulous little dog from them and they were lovely to deal with and totally realistic. They don't have kennels, you foster the dog for two weeks prior to adopting.
 
My parents rehomed a Dalmation from DT in Glasgow. Poor dog had been sent back to the rescue by the previous rehomers. As my parents later worked out, he was sent back because he needed surgery (which my parents paid for).

They found the staff nice, but the process overly bureaucratic. That said, the dog was well matched to my parents.
 
There is a small one called Islay Dog Rescue. A friend rehome a lovely young lurcher from there. Good luck, I have been looking too.

I had no idea the RSPCA and SSPCA were unrelated so I'm glad I mentioned that! That definitely gives us more options.

Got my rescue from the Blue Cross you can even register your interest online. Unlike the dogs trust where you have to be there the very day it is advertised and you go through a call centre etc etc.
 
I think I'm being really stupid but I can't see a Blue Cross rehoming site in Scotland... Someone mentioned Blue Cross on page 1 as well. Am I loosing the plot...?!
