Has anyone on here rehomed an ex racer and if so how have they turned out?

Have looked on the Heros website where you can loan or buy them. I did speak to one person who has rehomed an ex racer and said loaning can be costly, once you have given a donation and a monthly contribution you may as well of saved up and bought one. However, these charities do fantastic work and rely on donations, I suppose it depends on individual preference ie) long or short term loan etc

Stories and Pics would be gr8 if anyone has them!!!

I have, the one in my siggie, knew nothing about her when I picked her up but she has turned out fantastic!

Had her 11 months now, she is fantastic hacking, jumping, fun rides, beach, not too keen on schooling, but it has to be done!!

Struggle a bit keeping weight on her, but we do do an awful lot

She looks like a lovely Mare L154xxx.

Did you get her from a rescue or purchase privately? It sounds like she has turned out to be a fantastic allrounder. Does she have any quirks at all-like no breaks LOL!!

Well done for taking a chance on her

I've got one - had him about a year now and he's brilliant. I bought him unseen to hunt and does the job really well. He does everything (inc. break himself quite regularily!) This is us when we went visiting to hunt with the Warwickshire.

I have one. She was bought by a dealer at a sale in Ireland. She seemed ok for first week or so and then had what seemed live a mental breakdown. It took a lot of work and time to get her sane again. I was told many times to have her PTS as she was dangerous I have had her for 6 years and she is a brilliant horse now. to ride and on the ground. She is quirky and can be emotional and really needs her routine, but that is just the way she is. She's not everyones cup of tea but she is my cup of tea.

I don't think there is such a thing as a cheap horse.

I have one too!! Bought him from a dealer locally who had done the basic reschooling with him and sold him as a riding club type. He is exactly as she said he was, a lovely natured, really sweet little horse, never gonna be a world beater but is the best hack, absolutely idiot proof on the roads (and we meet a lot of idiots!!). He has his quirks and we've had a few teething troubles but I don't think that's because he's a TB, I think it's because he's a horse tbh. I love him to bits, had him just coming up to a year and we're still learning about each other but all in all he's a little cracker.

I have 3, all of them have turned into lovely allrounders with a little bit of work. There are 6 currently at the yard I'm at and they are all lovely calm, sensible horses.

If your willing to put the work in then you'll never sit on anything better...

Heros is a fantastic charity, however it works out about £1000 to loan one of their horses I believe, you could buy a nice one for that, although of course you don't have the support structure that you get with Heros.

I know of a few for sale so if you are looking for one let me know.

Yes I am on the look out, and have been tempted by a few. I have had TBs in the past, but one decided to dump me on the floor in a nasty fall, so have been a bit cautious since.

BUT.. you can say that about any horse cant you, not looking for a superstar, would be used for SJ,RC,hunting and local HT etcetc

If anyone has any details of anything 4 sale or even better for loan do pm me.

Thanks for the posts and pics they are all brill

I picked her straight up from a racing yard, she was free to good home!

She can be a bit face pulling in the stable, does'nt like you going in with a brush or skip, but just ignore her! Definitely likes a one to one relationship

And we have'nt managed to do standing still very well yet! But she's so good in other ways.

She picks things up very quickly too, did'nt take long to teach her rein back and flying changes! Just need to sort the medium trot aids now!!

Heya,
I have an ex-racehorse who I pretty much do everything with (at RC leveL). She defo has her quirks but dont all horses? I find that as a rule their training means that they have seen lots of life from an early age, travelling, shoeing, being around other horses e.t.c. Patience is defo a requirement but having seen other people on my livery yard also having quirky issues with their non-racehorses I have come to the conclusion that its just blimin' horses!!

Heros is a fab place and Grace provides excellent support, but there are much cheaper ways of rehoming a TB. You are basically paying for the privilege of being able to get help or send them back if it all goes wrong! Good luck and the credit crunch means that there are loadsa bargains to be found! :)

I have one to, bought mine privately almost a year ago and i lurve him to bits.....we've had issues and he prefers a one to one relationship most of the time. he csan be nappy and spooky but never dangerous, and he doesn't really need brakes because he's so laid back and retired.

tbs are a pain in the bum but they are the best horses ever.....tbs all the way for me

ex racers deserve a break and a good home after all the hard work they do, go for it and good luck x

One of mine is an ex-racer he is very laid back but can have his moments as any other horse can but overall he is fantastic and I couldn't ask for a better, more honest horse.
He does have his problems but that may have been caused by past homes, he wouldn't load or hack out but with work he now does both. He can be very lazy but has great paces and a decent jump in him.
He is easy too keep weight on.
His feet were horrendous when I first bought him, went lame as soon as he lost a shoe, if he kept them on 2 weeks it was amazing - he has been barefoot since october and works on all grounds.
He is very good in traffic, good to shoe, etc.
If I were to get another horse it would definatly be an ex-racer they are brilliant and very rewarding, don't think I would get another type again after owning my lad.

I know two who do RDA with severely mentally & physically disabled kids! They're handled by them too.
