rehoming ex racers

does anyone know of places i can re-home an ex-racer? have tried to sell/loan but no-one seems to be wanting an ex-racer at the moment and i don't have time over winter so it would just be turned out and brought in weekends
 
It really is the wrong time of year, i have a fab mare looking to loan out that is the most quiet and gentle to handle and ride, but being nearly 17hh and an ex racer one one replies to my emails as ex-racers still have a slight stimga of being mad, and i am sure no one believes me when i say she would be perfect for novice upwards
 
People are buying them - my friend was looking for one specifically. But she also had a very specific price in mind since there are so many for sale at the moment. She refused to pay more than £800 and within 6 days had found the perfect one with BSJA winnings, vetted him and bought him home. You'll sell him if you are realistic about the price, especially since we are coming in to winter. There is one in the wealden ad that is free to good home - he is sane and sound, but an ex racer! People generally discount ex racers, but there are people out there who are looking specifically for one!
 
They will sell, i looked for one, think they are great, unfortuatley don't need another one just yet. Try advertising as a project horse. But again price will make a difference i got Lady for £900, she was only two so young as well as an ex-racer so not set in her ways etc...... can start from:) scratch.
 
i think the fact he is 8 but still green may be making a difference? as he isnt directly off the track, i got him as a swap for my old horse (was not very nice on the ground so had to be a price for price swap) but all they had done is hack him out, i have put weight back on him and muscled him up a bit and done the very basics with him but ive never had a greenie before so wanted him to go to someone who could school him so he could actualy do something rather than just sit in a feild

i have been loaning a cob so most of my riding has been on that to give me back my confidence which i lost with my old horse so not up to training the ex-racer even tho he has the best temperment and is willing, i just dont have the confidence to do it
 
I would love one, but until I have school so I can ride after work through winter.. he'd be equally wasted with me! Its my goal for next year though..

I am looking for an ex-racer at the moment only problem is I don't have much cash as have only just made the decision (as I have just been advised by my vet to semi retire my mare) In a few months I will have plenty, but I just haven't had a chance to save!w
 
I'm suprised no one has bitten your arm off at the prospect of a loan, I know I would!!
Thing is with ex-racers, people seem to becoming more and more picky, which I personally think is rediciously, my friend is looking for one and she has a list longer than her arm of requirements!! *Realistically, these are not achieveable in any horse let alonw a slightly highly strung ex-racehorse!*
 
yeah he is sane (nice temperment and not highly strung) and has never been lame with me, i think it is because he is 8 people think he is going to of had more schooling than he has had even though it said on advert green and needs futher schooling..the people that have seen him for loan have either over estimated their ability or been from too far away so i as i would need to keep passport this wouldnt work in they needed it for any reason

oh and i put him down for 1500 (to include his tack +rugs) as i know people knock a few hundred off when they put offers in
 
Thats not the cheapest I have seen but not expensive if he is sane and sound. Maybe try putting the price without tack/rugs? I'm suprised you can't get a loan - whereabouts are you?
 
A completely off-topic question: What sort of rider weight limit would people set for their ex-racers?

I am slightly shocked that no one is biting, even given the time of year.
 
im in durham (north east) and how much do you think i should knock off? saddle is 3 month old t6 thorowgood saddle good condition and weetherbeeta tri-star rug with 100g and 200g liners and wetherbeta lightweight turnout rug and lightweight stable rug.
 
Nothing much seems to be selling at all in the North East at the moment, the ad-trader website seems to have the same horses advertised week after week... Some bargains out there for anyone looking. Good luck with finding a home for your horse!
 
Caroline, to be honest, I think the price you are asking is very reasonable and if I was looking, I would be interested. It could be that it's almost too reasonable and people are thinking something is wrong with it. Don't make a big thing about it being an ex-racer. It's a TB which is eligible for ROR classes, that's it. Promote what the horse is good at. Anyone taking on a TB should have dealt with them before and should be aware of what they are taking on. Hold on in there, and the right buyer will come along. It may be that you just need to change the wording on your ad a bit.
