After losing our wonderful 14 year old Staff at the end of the summer, we're now almost ready to invite a new 4 legged addition to our family. We're 'emotionally' ready, but, we are away for a few days at Christmas and it wouldn't be fair to take on anything now then disrupt it in a few weeks.
Ideally, we'd like to rehome a younger dog, or bitch, rather than get a pup as there's so many needing homes. However, we live on an Island and rehoming opportunities locally are very limited. I've made a few very tentative enquiries to mainland charities but they seem to want several visits, then may not be able to provide a required home visit. Whilst I fully support they need to know the potentil dog is going to the right home, for us, a mainland trip with the car is around £60, plus fuel.
So, if anybody knows of a GSD (apart from our Staff, I've always had them and was brought up with them, parents still have one), or a Staffie that will need a good home after Christmas, or, a charity/rescue that is happy to rehome to the Isle of Wight, please would you let me know?
We're currently 'doggysitting' OH's eldest son's Akita, 3 or 4 day a week as they have just had a baby. Never had anything to do with that breed before, but he's a lovely housedog. No brains whatsoever, he's the original blonde bimbo!

You could try Sarah at All Animal Rescue. They are based near Southampton and I know they home to the IoW. I'm not sure what they Have in at the mo, but have a look on their website. :-)

They may have someone they trust on the island that could home check.... lots of LOVELY staffies crying out for homes!

Ditto the above also please look at Guildford staffie rescue - contact Valerie Mann - they are cracking at the seams with too many dogs.. Can I just add a plea to looking for a staffie as while I really do like GSD's, they are not bring destroyed at the rate of up to 30 dogs a day because of their breed. Pm me if you want an intro to Val btw - we stay in contact and chat anyway.

They have looked at reforming to the iow before as well..
