I have a huge problem which I would welcome some advice for. I am moving abroad in 9 wks time and I have a horse who I need to rehome. He is 24yrs old and still rideable. I have researched various possibilities and am now looking at Monshall Equine rest & retirement livery in Devon. It will be a shame to retire him because he still has a number of years as a hack. I can't take him with me and putting him to sleep is an option I can't think about. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was in exactly the same position as you three years ago, when I got a job in Switzerland. Selling my boy was out of the question as was PTS as he was only 14! I went for the livery option -it has cost me about £200 per month and dread to tot up how much that is over three years, but he has been on the yard of a wonderful woman that has known him most of his life and I cannot fault the treatment he has had at any stage.I rode when I came home for holidays and also have a fellow forumite who has been keeping the old stick ticking over on a weekly basis! Happy to pm you the details of the yard if you like- it is also in Devon.Sadly for him,I am now returning to the UK so his days as a field ornament are drawing to a close and he will resume hacking duties and be relocated to Somerset.
So I suppose what I am trying to say is that retirement livery can and does work, especially if you are intending to return to the UK or come back for holidays. Good luck, whatever decision you make!

That really does make me feel better, I have been in bits about what to do with him. Would you send me the details please & I will get in touch with them. Many Thanks
