A comment on another thread got me thinking about this. You can now buy little loops that you attach to the reins so that your hands don't slip on the reins.

I saw these and thought that they would be perfect for my (small, 7 year old) daughter as her reins have a tendency to get longer and longer, especially if the pony puts its head down. However on further thought I would be too worried that her hand could get caught in them in the event of a fall, making it more likely that she could be dragged?? At the moment we have large knots in the reins that a) give her a marker as to where to hold the reins and b) act as a kind of stopper so the reins can't get too long

Has anyone used them? Are they effective? Any comments please

hi

yes I use them for my arthritic hands. They are great.

For a child they may or may not work. the loops are quite big so unlikely to get a hand stuck but pony may pull child over its head, I guess this could happen anyway

I don't think that I would use them for a child, have you tried those coloured rubber reins? A bit naff I know but my daughter found them very useful, I used to be able to say "Too long- hands on the GREEN!" (or whatever colour it was)

I also used elastic bands wrapped around the reins as tactile aids to help with the length of reins, so that she could feel when they got too long.

Cue very old photo...coloured reins just visible.

one of the best little childrens ponies I have ever come across that one was...sold her to someone in Sussex and I hope she was as good for their kids as she was for E.

never seen these rein bows, but there was a thread not long ago about them! x When i was little my parents used to mark the reins with a few white plaiting bands and that was my guide.....seemed to have worked at the time! tying my reins in a knot seemed to be more of a hindrence as the big cunky knot would then be in the way! x you used to get those coloured reins too but don't really like the look of them! x

I have them and they are used by a couple of 5 year olds on naughty sec A. Kids love them as pony can't pull reins out of their hands. So far never had a problem with them when the little madam decides to get rid of child. Saying that if they weren't being used pony would probably have got rid of children a lot more than she has. Helps a little bit with bucking cause pony can't pull the reins out of the childrens hands to put her head down.

would definetly recommend them.

At my old RDA group we used to add martingale rein stops to the (person) end of the reins. Easily adjusted to the correct length but if used on rubber reins they generally won't budge by accident and no worry about them getting stuck.
