hi all,
so i recently acquired a new horse hes so lovely in all ways but because of being ridden by amateurs for a long time he has developed a very hard/dead mouth. he is currently ridden in a rubber pelham with a curb chain. im finding it hard to keep him under control in this or more so I dont feel in control. there is no such thing as half halts ect with this horse you either pull to stop as anything else will just make him lean more.

anyway im working on all that and making him wait and listen and having a light hand with him. my problem is that my left arm doesnt have as much strength in it as my right, it has maybe 30-40% strength compared to the right also i can not close my hand into a fist so hold the reins between my thumb and fingers instead of in my hand. so when im riding this new horse im not able to hold him with my left hand at all as the reins slip out of my hand and i dont have the strength to hold. this has never been a problem before but then again ive never ridden a horse as strong as this.

so im looking for loop reins or something like this that would help! i cant find anyone that has them in ireland or the uk :(
does anyone know where i could find these r anything else ye think that might help! thanks

thanks for the links guys! no idea why i couldnt find them i was even on the equiport website!

teapot what do you suggest? you cant leave me hanging like that :). i was going to try him in a pelham with a port to see if that helps at all.

A waterford? There's nothing for them to hang off. I use one for jumping to eliminate battles before they start ;) though initially it was to stop neddy hanging off my hands as he learned to carry himself.

I used a loose ring waterford on my cob mare who would get strong and lean sometimes (usually when jumping). They can't get hold of that and lean on it. I used a ported myler on her at one point too but she just didn't seem happy in it and she really didn't feel comfortable in a pelham at all.

Waterford or tom thumb both work well on Fab if we're hacking with others. If cantering behind he seems to lose his manners unless I have one of them in and he realises he doesn't have the upper hand so decides not to be an idiot! His default is head down to tank and lean which he can't with them.

I was going to suggest a waterford (know a cob that can be just like the one you describe and that's what she's in as pelham was a waste of time!)
