I'm wanting to try and ride my horse in her pelham with 2 reins rather than roundings but I am wondering what thickness i would need as I don't want too much of a handfull to be faffing around with and would like to know first before buying 2 sets of reins heh :)

I have 1 set of flexigrip reins and 1 plain leather pair (for the curb) I only use my Pelham for xc though so wanted a plain set for the curb so easy to slip

I wouldn't go for rubber reins if riding with 2 as they are too bulky. Traditionaly the top rein is either plaited or laced and the curb rein is plain. I have quite small hands so go for 2 sets of plain where possible and they are usually 5/8in.

i usually use 2 sets of leather reins - the curb being a thinner/narrower leather so easy to see when picking up.

For showing you have a plaited pair on top and plain leather pair on bottom, the thickness depends on the horse, a fine tb type should have fine reins but a hunter/cob thicker reins to suit the neck, also depends on your hand size, why not go to the shop and try out holding different sizes.. :)
