Reintroducing mare and foal

Hi, Can anyone advise on when its viable to put a mare and foal back together in the same field? I'm currently rotating my mare and her daughter as we lost our weaning companion and needed the other mares as company for the foal. The foal is just 12 months now and the system appears to be working but I'd appreciate knowing others views/experiences as you never know!! Many thanks

hi once i weaned my foal and seperated her long enough for the milk to dry, i put her back in with her mum. at my last yard i had no choice really as field where sectioned off with electric tape and you only got one section per horse you owned and as both my field where together the foal had to go back with mum. when i had seperated they could still see each other but couldnt get to each other the foal had a friend and was fine with this and mum and daughter where fine with each other once again when put back together.

Thanks very much for letting me know how you did it - sorry to hear about your mare not being in foal (as yet?) this year! - hopefully it will sort out! They're a night mare - I 've got 1 yearling from 3 attempts (my first foal had to be put down as a yearling after an accident and my mare aborted at 9 and a half months this year which was vile) - Its so bad I've decided to return to competing!! hi no probs i think shes havin to good off a time!! sorry to hear about your youngster i lost mine to an accident at 13 months old and that wasnt nice never mind the aborting.a girl at the yard her mare aborted late and she did say is most vile thing she had seen. dont think i will go back to serious competing as have retired my mare!! however a friend is off to uni soon and her mum (shes my friend as well!!) wont be able to cope with the 2 horses so i'm gonna use the big one for what ever i want!!!................may compete on foalie if it ever gets born!!!!!
