relaxed larynx?

One of my horses has 'made a noise' when cantering ever since I bought him fro a sale when he was 18. It was vel mild and only showed after really strenuous effort. It has gradually deteriorated with age over the oast 11 years and for several years he was a light hack but is now fully retired.

He recently developed a cough - he doesn;t generally cough. Vet has been twice and I noticed and told her at last visit that he emits a nasty smell when he coughs, she said this smelt 'stomchy' and could be becuase he has a relaxed larynx. This of course co-incides with the noise making during hard exercise.

However, following two courses of ventapulmin and a precautionary course of norodine, the cough is slightly better but still smelly.

Vet is due to call me back to discuss, but am wondering, being as chest is clear, pulse, temp etc all normal, horse ok in himself and no others come down with a cough, whether this may be due to this relaxed larynx getting worse and if so will it ever (the cough) get better?

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks
