Hi

I am a long time lurker on here, but I am posting because I need advice please. Apologies in advance for the essay!!

I am going to be relocating from the midlands to Manchester for work, and have three horses to take with me. I have no final plans yet with regards to a house, but I will be working at The Christie, so it will be reasonably close to there. Any advice in terms of yards and instructors would be incredibly helpful. The horses are all very different, with very different needs.

Horse 1 - Old retired TB. Very happy pottering about doing her own thing. Prefers to live out over summer, but wants to be in at night over winter. Holds her weight well for an old TB.

Horse 2 - 18yr old german sports pony (that went a little bit over height!) - Very well behaved and schooled, but will not live out! She has brought herself in one too many times!! Currently in light work.

Horse 3 - 5yr old dressage bred hanno, and he is the priority really. Very laid back chap and is happy in or out. Long term plan is for him to work up the levels. Currently hacking and schooling with a bit of pole work. I will be working crazy hours so the ideal would be for a dressage rider/ instructor to ride him a couple of times a week to keep him on track, in addition to me riding him. Very well behaved and laid back for a 5yr old warmblood.

I am prepared to travel for the right yard and facilities, and I currently travel an hour. An indoor arena and a yard with good turnout would be the ideal. I am aware that is a big ask!! In addition any recommendations for a horsey 'support network' e.g farriers and vets would be helpful.

Thank you in advance!

Agree with the above that you need to be looking to the Cheshire side.

You could look to the north Manchester direction but you have access to more high level dressage trainers and facilities if you look more to the Cheshire side.

High legh riding school 07584 823040 about half an hour's journey from Christie's.. Mosslands Farm Irlam 07888 676446 about 25 minutes from Christie's
Where abouts will you be living?

Thanks for all your replies :) I am going to explore the above suggestions.

In terms of where we will be living that is still up for debate at the moment, but hopefully within a reasonable distance of The Christie. I may also look at finding somewhere suitable for horse one and two and basing the 5yr old somewhere more dressage orientated.

Many thanks, and any more suggestions gratefully received :)

I more suggestion Dean Valley Equestrian Centre Woodford near Stockport 07930 579835 About 25 minutes from Christie's.
Very good centre

Our yard is about an hour from The Christie and is full livery. No idea if you want to live in the city but plenty live more on the fab countryside around Mcr and commute in. I live in Buxton but worked in Stovkport/Manchester.

YO is totally fabulous and can manage any individualised needs. No indoor but outdoor with lights.

2 regular dressage trainers who compete at PSG/Inter 1 give lessons and school horses on the yard.

24/7/365 turnout available.

To add we don’t have the facilities of Dean Valley/Somerford etc But are very close to both, and people regularly box out to lessons, clinics, comps. Personally I’d avoid Somerford as a livery - turnout is pretty restricted on most of the livery yards. Though I don’t know all of them.

No idea what livery at Dean Valley would be like but it’s a lovely place to compete and train. People are very friendly.

Agree with Somerford. Best winter turnout you'll get is 3 hours 5 days a week. Right now they can go out all night but you'd need a good doer for that in prolonged periods with no rain, the grass is literally scalped. Facilities to die for, though.

Dean Valley has a short farm ride and a gallops, big outdoor and nice indoor at extra cost, but no hacking worth talking about, it's in a very urban area.

How about Carringtons, anyone know what that's like lately?

How close do you feel the stables needs to be to the Christie? I assume you mean Didsbury not the satellite at Macclesfield?

There are several yards in the Alderley area including one in Great Warford called Copper Beeches that does full livery at grass or with stables. Again, hacking is an issue unless you're on The Edge. But that would put you right on the A34 for the Christie.

Royston Sport Horses is a nice little yard with a knowledgeable owner investing in the business. Grazing was a real mud pit in winter when I saw it but that was 2 years ago and she had plans to improve it. She was a big believer in horses getting turnout. Hacking dubious, some fast roads.
