My TB is refusing to pick up his right hind. When I try to pick it up he kicks out and stamps it down. We get there eventually...after much swearing (from both parties!) and he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable. I have manipulated his whole leg from quarters to pastern and can't find any pain, heat, wounds, etc.

Any ideas? We do this every day and every day it's the same!

Simple answer is mud fever but I guess you'd have spotted that:)

Extend the search, the pain must be coming from somewhere.

When my lad did that it turned out to be arthritis. He was not lame or particularly stiff but I put him on Maxavita and he was fine until we lost him through an unrelated problem.

mine's like that on his right fore... it's a real battle. All other feet he's fine (just about pick up the left fore to hoof pick). He will not let me pick it up in anyway whatsoever. He's on glucosamine. He's sound, no heat, no swelling.

have you poked around near hind too? could be that bearing more weight on it when he lifts the other leg is causing him the problem?

Would be inclined to say it wouldnt be that leg thats hurting him,it will be the other leg, sounds like he doesnt want to take all his weight on the other leg?

One of mine can be like this with his near hind due to arthritis. We get there eventually, although I don't force him to pick it up all the way!

This, my horse has a stiff hip on one side and so finds it hard to pick up that hind without doing it really slowly and carefully. Given a bit of patience we get there in the end and the osteo comes to give him a work over every few months to keep it loose.
