Hello everyone,
This year it is my aim to get out competing a bit more.
At the end of last year I did a mini ODE and loved it.
Trouble is, I could memorise several dressage tests but I really struggle with remembering my way about a course of show jumps! I'd really appreciate any tips or will this just get easier the more and more I go out and do it?

ALWAYS walk the course before you enter the ring.
And beforehand when you're practising, get someone else to come out with you, and tell them to set up a course. First of all, you should walk it, then think it through. Then go in and try your best! Practise makes perfect, the worst that can happen is that you forget. Hope this helped! X

Obviously you'll walk it first for your striding in doubles and distances etc.
Once I've walked it I stand in the middle and go through it. Then while I'm warming up I'll visualise it.
Try and pick something specific about each fence then say it to yourself. Ie 1 upright, 2 green oxer, 3 pink fillers etc etc.
The more you do it the easier it gets.

I walk it - but as I'm going round I stop and look back going over and over in my mind. Then I try to watch at least 1 person jump round before I go and warm up (much easier where the warmup is by the ring!!). Then as I'm waiting to go in I Hoover it several times in my mind again!

My 7 yr old daughter has no issues remembering course now. I have been taking her Once a wk to local venue and she watches various courses and learns that way
Really good way to remember is by going and getting your eye in with no pressure.

Look at the picture of the course, walk it, a few times if needed and watch a few people ride it.
A well designee course is flowing, so even if you can't remember what the next jump is you should end up going on.roughly the right direction them just keep looking ahead for the next number!
