Hi,

I have been told my boy needs graduated egg bars all round. It is all related to stifle injury currently being treated so i can claim through the insurance.

Question is when do i pay the farrier? The shoes with fitting is costing £180 and i simply do not have the money to pay this (even if i do get it back!)

Do you pay upfront then claim back or do you get an invoice or such like off the farrier, claim on insurance then pay?

Its all very confusing and worrying..:(

I think it preferable that you pay the farrier up front as the insurance may or may not pay out. You can try asking your farrier if he will invoice you and wait for the insurance to pay him but be prepared for a resounding NO!

Thanks AmyMay. That was my fear. :(

I will always, and have always provided the very best for my horses but £180 for a set of shoes makes me feel slightly ill!

gosh. that is quite a lot, hope he doesn't pull them off regularly, gulp! good luck with him though I hope it helps

Pulls them off for fun! But he is on in hand exercise for 2 months then in a 12x12 paddock so hopefully i wont lose the shoes even if he does pull them.

Its a nightmare :(

It's a massive amount.

But, speak to your farrier, and ask him what he normally does in situations like this.

Your insurance will usually just pay the extra on top of what you'd normally pay for a set of shoes, so if your normal set is £60, they'd give you £60 towards the shoeing, how about suggest to your farrier you pay the normal amount and pay the rest back when you get the insurance pay out, this is what i've known people do

Just spoke to him. Hes a gooden and said i can pay half when hes sod and half when i get paid. What a life saver!

I should have just rang and asked first but i felt really cheeky and slightly daft asking him!

Long over reach boots help to an extent. Its the way he throws himself around! Stupid animal

Thats brilliant about paying in 2 stages. I have had to have a bar shoe on & she has been wearing a Cavallo Simple Hoof Boot over the shoe in the field, no way she can pull it off if that helps!

AmyMay- Hes really good, he has really helped me out letting me pay like that. I am so grateful :D

Merlin- I was always under the impression the hoof boots would fit properly with any type of bar shoe on? Do you think they would work with Egg bars? If it means they stay on i am willing to try! :p
