Chatting with someone yesterday and they said that since he's stopped taking the greyhounds for £10.00 a time(he was done) the racing kennels are putting the ones that are too slow in kennels together without water or food until they die as its cheaper than the vet...

Really sad

Call me heartless but I actually didn't see anything wrong in the fella shooting them for a tenna each...atleast it was quick....

There was another 'shock horror' article in the newspaper the other day about greyhounds being used for vivisection at a vet school - AFTER they had been humanely destroyed by the vet I hasten to add. Perhaps I am heartless too but I couldnt see any problem with that.

I agree with you SM that it is better for an animal to be killed quickly and humanely then starved to death in the way you describe

Hi Severnmiles - agree totally with you about the guy humanely destroying greyhounds. Yes, some of them were young, but there are far too many of them looking for new homes after racing, and in my opinion it was better that they were destroyed humanely then abandoned, or filling up rescue centres with little chance of rehoming. There aren't enough good homes for genuine cruelty cases to be rehomed to.

I saw that piece as well about the greyhounds being used at the vet school. I agree I can't see anything wrong with this, sad that too many greyhounds are produced but better being put to sleep humanely than some of the options. My daughter is at the vet school in question, but all they seem to have for their dissection classes are Staffies from the local dogs home. By the way, its not vivisection, that is done on live animals

Ooops sorry my mistake, I thought that was how it had been described in the article but obviously not - dissection I guess then

That's horrible, so is shooting them and so is breeding them, not using them then having them pts and sending them for dissection, though that is probably the best option of the three. Mans best friend?

Not sure what the public expects us to practise on to become decent vets, much as doctors dissect bodies, we must really dissect animals.
MM-sadly it is mostly staffies or staffie types we get for dissection too

Think you are at the same uni TSH, Liverpool was specifically mentioned in this newspaper article as receiving these greyhounds . But agree, you have to learn on something don't you.

It is a V sad situation, but unfortunately the greyhound industry appears to be in a similar situation to the horse industry, irresponsible owners breeding out of run of the mill dogs just for the sake of it. What people also forget is that something like 15000 greyhounds are imported from ireland alone each year but 15000 ex racers arnt getiing rehomed each year. My husbands family train greyhounds and really struggle to find people to rehome these dogs with, usually the owners dont want to take them home regardless of how many thousands of pounds they have won them. Most respectable trainers would never leave the dogs to starve / die and i know through taking home our own racer that the NGRC take abandoned greyhounds very seriously, you now have to sign to take over ownership so if thyre ever found abandoned they know who to go back to.
