Did he actually have some problems with other dogs/cats that you overcame, or were the previous owners exaggerating?

Well to be honest I do think there was some exageration going on........apparently he had a dog and a cat at some staged prized from his mouth
of what I have observed he actually loves to socialise with dogs, me thinks his handler was afraid to allow him to be a sociable boy
Even the day I took him I was advised to muzzle him at all times around other animals

Mmm, sure doesn't look aggressive!
Some people get quite confused by dog behaviour. My lot (4) play a bit rough, they make a lot of noise and they mock-close their jaws around each others' necks. When the JRT does it to the GSD everyone laughs, but when the GSD does it to the JRT some people think he is about to kill him. They really can't read doggie language at all!
He's lovely, like a big old bear! Can he have meant serious harm if they were able to prise a cat out of his mouth? I know I couldn't get one out of Lizzies mouth with a crow bar
I'm sure you've had LOTS of experience with people who make stuff up to offload a dog they don't want

And OMG - you have kidnapped our cat Shah! Please keep the annoying wench.
Oh no, there she is, you own her double! Would you like a matching pair?
