Well, I give up.
Persuaded the guy to put the three horses onto a smaller field - bear in mind this is an ex dairy farm with pretty good grass. Great, I thought, lets see how they get on.
Went to visit the other day and the stupid prat has only put a round bale of new hay in with them!!!!!! Apparently, this is the second one they have had in there in about two weeks!!! So three obese horses, out on grass, are also getting through a big round bale of this years hay about once every ten days. AND he's talking about giving them hard feed when he starts 'working' them. My two horses take about five to six weeks to get through a round bale (bearing in mind they really have no other grazing). I asked why he was feeding hay and he said, 'because he was told horses should have ad lib hay, and they should be able to eat all day' I did point out that they had grass to eat 'all day' and he said, 'Yes, but they must be hungry because when I put the hay in they all ran over and started eating it'. Yes, I said, because it's easy for them - why should they waste time hunting out grass and walking around when they can just stand in front of a bale of hay and stuff their faces.
He thinks I'm mean because OH's new horse, Jiro, is staying at the farm at the moment (different field) and he is on the same ration routine as my lot and I won't let him put a round bale in his paddock!!
Gah! I just hope that none of the horses goes down with laminitis or a heart attack, poor things.
