Went down to do the horses at about 6.30pm and the owners had just arrived, still unpacking their car. It was dark at the time and I told them what had happened. He was obviously a bit shocked but took it very well and we will assess the damage in the morning. We both agreed that the gardener was the best person to consult and I have offered to pay all costs.

I am dreading doing the horses in the morning

ahh i was wondering what happend,sounds like it didnt go to badly,what do they expect,weve had numerous horses trample our drive and garden and a heard of cattle,goes with the territry lol !!

You do a really good job of looking after their place, and their horse, when they are away, you are utterly trustworthy and the place is always pristine...I've been there so I know.

And it's not as though you deliberately set out to hold a polo match or a mini Glastonbury festival on their lawn, it was an accident.

AND at the end of the day.....it's only a lawn, it will recover in no time.

I ought to tell you about some of the awful gaffs and the resulting damage I managed when I was a Celebrity Cleaner, like chewing up and wrecking a £1000 antique Persian rug with the hoover on my first day. There, that's made you feel better hasn't it?!! Chin up mate, it's not so bad.

Well they have been really good about it although the husband wasn't able to survey the damage with clear eyes as he had quite a lot to drink last night!!

I thanked them for taking it so well!
 
You are not alone! Im on a yard with only one other livery and then the YO daughters horses. the other livery left my mares door open and she spent a night out on the town going for a nice wander round their grounds... including on their pristine lawns. Then 2 nights later livery left her ponies door open and he got out and had a polo match on the front lawn... YO not impressed to have to cathch pony at 1am... Livery is now leaving but not as direct result... they were at 1st angry but YO can now laugh it off...

Good on you for being honest with them... and hey, mistakes happen!
 
Well done for being honest, & if they have a gardner he will fix it in no time. I once broke an antler off a prized ornament in my one & only foray into house cleaning, & I am ashamed to say I didn't own up, just stuck it behind the clock & hoped they didn't notice!!
 
I think you have done the best thing - just keep your head down and pay promptly when you know the damage - accidents do happen!
 
I had quite a few incidences of my ponies on the field owners croquet lawn years ago.

Hoiking the divot back up with the curved end of a tent peg and tipping loads of water in the dip did wonders!

I only once had to admit the trampling when the owners were at home and we couldn't repair it in time, as it mostly seemed to happen when they were on holiday and the gardener and I had a few days to beaver away!
