Decided to check trailer over as it is getting some use, lights floor etc etc, fitted new side light, jacked it up to check wheel bearing play, spun the wheels round to check tyres, oh ohhh, splits on the side walls on all 4 tyres :(, masses of tread, it's down to age and rubber deteriorating, sometimes have weight of 2 beasties in, so straight off to tyre place for some proper 90 (not 70 van type) spec tyres £170.00 all in :(, but better than risking breakdown or worse and accident through faulty or incorrect tyres, would never forgive myself.

WHEN DID YOU LAST CHECK YOURS ?

Mine completely seized up this winter due to the cold and wet weather (it lives outdoors). Apparently, it is a common problem since they stopped putting asbestos in the brake pads.

I checked mine as it had been standing a while and my tyre pressures were down to 20 . Thankfully I hadn't put the pony it at that point.

We have new ones all round (ouch!), but do try and check regularly, it's so easy for something sharp to get stuck in the treads etc. Ours doesn't get a huge amount of work, so I guess like yours we will be looking at replacing the tyres while the tread still looks good.
Frightening the damage that could be done with dodgy tyres.
Absolutly always better to be safe rather than sorry! Peace of mind when towing too knowing that your trailer is in good nik.

Good one P :D

When we bought our trailer, he had five tyres with good tread. Got him home, checking him over, and realised that all were perishing on the sidewalls :(

Poor Hugh. So, five new tyres later.... and yes, they are the heavy van rated ones as this is a three horse trailer and will be carrying some weight!

One re-mortgage later... (not to mention the new floor, half of which is currently residing in the hallway; the new breast and bum bars, the new side padding, the new light clusters, the new brakes, the new electrics, the new ramp springs, the new.... Ho hum. At least we'll know it's all in pristine condition - just need the mechanice to be back from his hols to help D put it all together :D).

Every single time my Dad walks past it. Dad has been in the tyre industry for over 40 years and had his own tyre business for more than 20 - he also has eyes like a hawk. There would be no excuse for me having worn tyres or not having enough air in them.

You are right though, it is easy to forget. We get customers in all the time with flat bed trailers/horse trailers and their tyres are either perished or have been run without enough air in them.

my trailer lives out side and the brakes had seized up too! So thats a common problem is it? I got it check over fully by a local garage before I used it. Do they do trailer covers or anything?

Yep you can get covers for trailers but mine lives out and I have never had a problem. I leave the handbrake off and put chocs under the wheels

so no point really getting a cover is there? thats what I do :) leave hand brake off and put some blocks in front the wheels. It also has a wheel clamp on it and a hitch lock!
