My friend recently purchased a mare, who three months later turned out to be in foal. Unfortunately the mare lost the foal, as it was unknown she didnt have any proper care or scans.

The vet has said that the mare is unsuitable for foaling and my friend should consider having the mares ovaries removed in standing keyhole surgery. Does anyone have any experience of this or know anything about it?

One of the mares at our yard had this done as she was verging on dangerous to ride. It was very successful and while she's still a very strong and fiesty pony - she's now rideable and enjoys life to the max!!

This is the only reason I've heard of it being done before - if the mare is fine behaviourwise and there's no other health reason it seems a bit drastic, unless he thinks she's going to get in foal again without anyone knowing !?!
