Hello all :o I have a bit of a problem with a rogue farrier. My girl is called Lena and she's been shoeless for a year now but due to extremely dry weather and the tracks near our stable being heavily gritted recently with granite chips she's been feeling her feet and hobbling over spiky stones. I decided to get some shoes put on her front feet only and see how it went, since she's a big girl and she tends to put on weight if I don't ride a lot  The farrier who came was a recommendation from a friend of a friend, since our usual farrier is out of the country at the moment. I finished work and headed up to the stable to find this:

We trimmed some of her frog away so it was no longer in contact with the shoe. I took her out for a short 45 min walk and trot and she seemed fine on the road, in fact she was better than she has been since the new gravel went down. I'm tempted to leave the shoes on for now until my regular farrier comes back in a month's time, but I worry she'll turn lame if do.

Would you leave the shoes on or remove them??

Needless to say the farrier won't be returning!

Off come the shoes then :) thanks everyone for the swift replies!

I've heard a lot of good things about Easyboots, but I'd have to buy secondhand whereas our local warehouse has shiny new Cavellos. Anything to choose between them in terms of fit/toughness?

Lots of people like Cavellos, I loathe them and prefer Easyboot Gloves (but you need the fit kits as a tight fit is everything). A well fitting pair of Gloves feels like riding barefoot, you just don't notice them,

re the easyboot gloves they are fantastic but they must fit correctly or they are a total waste of time and will be ruined within minutes. I do everything in mine galloping, going through water/sludge etc.

Have a look on youtube they will show you how they fit etc. For second hand ones try ebay preloved or on http://phoenixhorse.myfastforum.org/ on the items for sale and wanted section.

Cavallo's..............like marmite, love em or loathe em :D I love them, dead easy to measure/fit, cheap and last. Mine never budge; Easily available on ebay. Tip; Do buy the easycare pastern wraps ( sold for use with old mac/boas ) so they don't rub

I think while it's a good idea to have a couple of favourite brands in mind, you need to be open minded until you've measured and tried some as certain brands may rule themselves out pretty quickly because of your girl's foot shape :)

Cavallos seem to be working well for my mare (shock horror, the cheapest option NEVER works ha ha!) but others didn't work in terms of hoof shape or because they moved her breakover forward which doesn't work for her action. Check out the measuring guides on the various websites to narrow down what you think might be your options :)

Well, the shoes are coming off later today :) Lena does have big feet, she's quite a clunker so she's been nicknamed the 'bulldozer' on the yard! I've decided to try with Cavallos first, and failing those we'll make the rounds until we find something that works.

Thanks again everyone!
