Removed over 40 ticks from my dog today

I am absolutely disgusted. There are few creatures on Earth I truly cannot deal with - ticks are one of them.

I took my cavalier to a walk around the woods today and she had a blast. On the way home she was on the floor of the passengers side and I looked at her and saw a tick walking on her head. I stopped the car, sweared a lot and removed it, then carried on. Not even 5 minutes later, another one. On the 5th stop I was borderline panicking, ran to the nearest dog boutique and bought a (very expensive!) special shampoo for her.

Ran home and gave her a bath. I then examined her head to toe and removed over 40 ticks from her, all tiny and disgusting!!!

She has been on her carrier the entire evening. She is still scratching a lot so I really don't want her running around the house and coming in contact with our other dog.

What else can I do for her?

Advocat. I give it to mine and have no problem with ticks. Also prevents lungworm so mine all get this as well as a their normal wormer which I get from my vet.

To get rid I use a tweezer and twist anti clockwise gently to make the tick release. Friend has also recommended putting a dab of nail polish which effectively suffocates the tick and makes it easier to remove. Possibly a solution for short coated dogs though!

Advantix repels ticks! Great stuff but you have to keep it away from cats while its wet.

Never had a tick on H while using it and he loves long grass! My YOs dog was covered in ticks until I told him about it last year and he started using it too.

Use a tick pick to remove if they are attached. NEVEER use a lighted cigarette, Vaseline or nail polish as this makes them regurgitate into the bite and increases the risk of tick borne diseases. If your dog does not go swimming then a scalibor collar prevents ticks as well as sand flies.

I live in deer central (goodwood and surrounding areas).

I discovered this last summer it's amazing. I use it twice a week and if they do get a tick I can spray this on and they shrivel up and DIE!!!

If I do spray twice or three times a week then they may get two or three tics a season but that's in. Without it I was removing daily !

Yuk, big sympathy, it's disgusting and makes me want to hurl having to take them off.

Frontline spot on no longer works but the spray does.

Hi guys, thank you for your sympathy. I actually use advantix on her and the last time I applied it was about 3 weeks ago. The guy at the pet shop thinks she must've stepped on a tick nest since there were so many and so small. I did use a tick remover.

Tofee, I'm gonna look into that product, for sure.

Frontline spray works.

The Barrier pet care above does not declare it's ingredients beyond "plant oils" so I would not use it.

There are quite a few "natural" products on sale that are ok for dogs & toxic to cats as well as setting off my allergies.

For more information about ticks check out BADA UK. Lots of independent info regarding ticks and tick borne diseases

You are lucky:p we got a greyhound in covered in lice and ticks, he has hundreds, his body was covered, we used frontline spray and advantix, the one we could not get off literally dropped off with those treatments.

I guess my biggest concern is the products we're using will only repel the ticks, not kill them - and with kids and my grandmom in the house, I'm afraid someone will get something!

Luckily none of mine have had ticks, i used frontline and advantage. I, however, got bit by a deer tick just over a year ago and contracted Lymes disease. Not very pleasent! So remember to protect yourself as well as the dogs - something i didn't even think about before! lol.
