I have got a dressage show in a few weeks. . .

Him being a grey anything shows as im sure many of you have experienced!

He has got giant stains up his neck and basically all over!

How do i get rid of them. . .i would usually just wash them off. . .but it being so cold i dont know what to do about them. . .i suppose i could give him a bath with warm water. . .

But what do you all do to remove annoying stains before a show?

Thanks

Wash with warm water and plenty of towels at the ready for drying the instant the stains have gone. Alternatively as katie said, cactus cloths work well and I have some water-free shampoo (Horsewise stuff) which works well... although really ingrained stains will need washing really!

Bath him in warm water them rub him with a towel, and if youve got a Thermatex put that on, 2 if poss. As for shampoo I would use Quick Silver, wet him and put it neat on the stains and leve it 5 miniutes. Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover is excellent for removing stains.

i cant remember the name of it but its in a tall white bottle, its apple scented and is like purple fairy liquid, i usually dab a bit of that on to a damp sponge and then scrub in a circular motion, then either wash or use a different sponge to rinse and dry the patch off, make sure you don't let the muddy water run down the neck etc as it makes it look ten times worse!
also if he only has small ones i use wipes (baby) as they do quite a good job and make my ponies black points shine.

ps i will reply with the name of the shampoo in a min.

QR I have read that soaking in white vinegar then washing off is meant to be good for stains. Have not tried it though myself. If you want to get his tail really clean though fill a bucket with warm water and add some biological powder. Even the cheap basic stuff is fine to use. Then soak the tail for as long as you can hold the bucket for and see the dirt start to come off. I only soak below the tail bone though so it doesn't irritate the skin. Have only used this on tails though as wouldn't recommend anywhere else as horses have sensitive skin so I am led to believe. Then give the tail a good old scrub with a brush and rub hair strands together with your hands. Rinse off then wash tail again with fairy liquid or shampoo and repeat the scrubbing to get a good lather. I normally rinse then apply a conditioner to the tail ( and manes too ) so as to make them soft because the scrubbing and stuff used to wash them can make the hairs a bit dry to the touch.
Apologies if you know this already or if you already have a tried and tested trick that works.
This was Mcfly our cob at a ride in May and you can see his white tail in which we used the method described above to get his tail clean

I now feel really mean as last Saturday I just used cheap washing up liquid and a hosepipe to wash off legs, neck, belly nd bum! (Lots of scrubbing with a water brush helps).

A good scraper, fleece rug in stable and lots of hay and hairy coloured coblet was quite happy.

Hangs head in shame................. and wishes she had a bay horse.

Thankyou all. . .i will have a go at what you have mentioned!!

Imsure he would be perfectably ok having a bath as he is a sturdy lad. . .and i have plenty of rugs to pile high on him hehe

Thanks
