So after last thread the littlest dog has been diagnosed with kidney failure.

He was first blood tested and then given some 'renal' food and told to give him treats low in phosphorous.

He has been blood tested again since then, and he has lost some weight (a good thing!), seems brighter and happier, and generally more alive than he has done in months previously- we thought he was just getting old.

He is also being syringed once a day with propalin syrup to help regain control of his bladder- also working.

Also, the other dog has been moved onto mealtimes to try and restrict the ill ones access to normal food, which seems to be working but he has also lost a little weight which he can't really afford too. Both dogs used to have adlib amounts of dry food and did very well on it. They would have been supplemented with various bits of cooked meat, gravy, and raw veg too.

Does anyone have any bright ideas on keeping weight on the healthy one?

And does anyone know of any foods that can be fed to a dog in kidney failure?

What is he fed now? Anything low phosphorous and lower protein is ok - wet food and raw are good as dehydration is hard on the kidneys.

For the healthy one is he eating less? Or can you give him more smaller meals?

My terrier had a serious bout hepatitis at 12yrs. and was touch and go. She refused to eat the tinned Hills presciption food and the vet said best to make your own.I boiled some chicken and rice some chopped carrots to aid the liver added a little plain cottage cheese and a bit of stock/jelly from the chicken. I made it in batches and could freeze it.She always ate it up. Foods low in phosphorous and not salty can help .She went on to live until 18 and was a real poppet.
