So...i'm weighing up the cost of hire v the cost of buying.

DOnt want to go down the trailer route - ballsed up the test on first attempt, horse went lame.... sold the trailer/car two years ago and not keen to go back down that route. Been looking at the RM's they are v expensive but there are a few old ones second hand. How much would you expect to pay? It's cheaper maybe but then need to stump up the cash..i found a second hand one for 4K , 3 counties do them from 7,250 or thereabouts - but i dont know if there is any warranty with these - although there is the option of finance..does anyone have any experience of buying from them??

what would you expect to pay for an old style second hand one ie

3.5ton Renault master horsebox. P reg.

Professionally converted into a horsebox. Takes two horses facing backwards. Space over cab for storage and tack storage in the back. Whip holder, bridle hooks and many other hooks and storage shelves inside. Also two grooming kit holders on the inside of both doors. Lovely low ramp, great for fussy loaders. CD player and very tidy cab to seat 3. Really lovely little lorry. Used regularly by 5'2" lady for the last few years but is now not needed. There is no spring on the ramp but as it is small i can do it on my own. Equimat matting to the floor and walls in the horse area.

Mot until end november 2015. (No tax as you cant transfer it anymore) has literally done less than 30 miles since its mot!

No heater in the cab as its broken but we just used a little plug in one that goes in the cigarette lighter if we needed one. Cracked rear light. Apart from that shes a good runner and has never let me down.

Tbh an older model that has been well maintained and looked after would be as good as a newer model, unless you are planning on doing lots of miles.

My original Renault Master was an M reg Mark 1 model. It was a lovely van to drive and reliable, but started to cost me a bit to get it through its mot's. It did not have power steering but bar that very easy to drive.

I then up graded it to a newer Mark 11 'Y' reg but came with low mileage and it has not let me down once in the 6 years of ownership. I bought it from a chap who used to work for Three Counties, then branched out on his own, and has been converted to as high a spec as the Three Counties ones.

I have had a couple of dealings with Three counties for routine issues and they are fab, and would definitely recommend. a friend of mine also has one from them, and again very pleased with hers too.

Do the 3 counties come with any warranty or anything? How long does it take or do they have some in stock (the very basic versions!)
L&M the chap who worked for 3 counties where is he based if you dont mind me asking!

Sadly the chap who did mine no longer converts them, but was in Cleobury Mortimer - hence I go to Three Counties if needed. They will also service and MOT your van if local.

I am pretty sure they offer a warranty and the making time depends on how many they have on the go - think my friend had to wait about 6 weeks.

Just call Kate and have a chat - they are ever so helpful and friendly, and will work within whatever budget you can afford. My friends model was very basic, but she has bits and bobs added on as she could afford it.

I have yet to meet anyone who has anything bad to say about Three Counties.

Not as such, I don't think, but Paul very helpfully sorted out an expensive problem with occurred with mine after I'd had it a few months. Basically something simple went wrong (engine related) so I contacted Paul who sent the part for my mechanic to fit. It should have been a 5 minute job. My mechanic over tightened it, the bolt sheared off into the engine head which then turned into a very expensive job. Paul was great about it, I arranged to get it towed back to Three Counties and he repaired it at no cost at all, which I thought was excellent service. I'm sure it would have cost a heap otherwise. So thumbs up from me for Three Countiesl

Do they cost a lot to run? My friend thinks it'd be cheaper to hire but 85 quid a day for hire.... So how to make that decision - I guess need to be going out a lot to make it worth the investment. Im guessing they don't lose their value much? NB the one I mentioned earlier is 4k an old one but 224k miles - seems a lot??

Mine was 275 for insurance and breakdown for any driver over 25, tax was I think 260 and mot and service the same as a normal car. Tyres were of course more due to size and because it was an older model it did start to cost a bit in running costs
