Bimbo question alert! ...Tested the anti freeze level today in my Renault Master (M reg) and it showed as low. But as the water chamber only has a little free space in it it looks like we'll have to drain at least some water out before topping it up. Ideally, as I don't know what kind of coolant was in it before, we should really drain it completely and fill it afresh presumably...

Is this the kind of thing you would do yourself or would you always wait and get a mechanic to do it?

Judging by the tide marks in the chamber it was red rather than blue / green... but to be perfectly honest, the water is water coloured now (shameful face) though I've only put the teeny-tiniest amount of water in it to top it up since I got it last Autumn. I thought the anti freeze had been sorted as part of the pre-sale service but looks like not.

But from the antifreeze on sale in Halfords, the red one is for post-1998 and the blue-green ones are for pre-1998... so it looks like it's probably had the wrong one in before as it's a pre-1998 van..?
 
If it was red it was most likely OAT antifreeze which is the latest technology I would go for that. Previous to that it was nearly all Ethylene Glycol Blue but modern engines dont like it.
It would be quite easy to do but if your unsure get somebody to do it.
If it was mine I would drain the whole system and refill with either type but dont mix them.
The red?orange types although more expensive will keep cleaner and last at least twice the life.
 
Thanks Popsdosh. I knew not to mix them but didn't realise that the newer OAT ones were backwards compatible as it were, as the label seems to suggest they're for newer engines only, but I can see now re-reading it that that's just how i've interpreted it. I'll get a mechanic to do it, because knowing my luck we'll get stuck with it half done and un-drive-able! Thanks for your help.
