Interesting day there today, but for all the wrong reasons!
Pretty poor turnout but even poorer prices
I really felt for Henk, a lot of time and effort has been put into the horses and their presentation etc but no-one wanted to put their hands in the pockets today (or is that just Britain in general?). You couldn't even get the youngsters on the ground for the amount people were bidding.
Hence loads didnt sell but there were some bargains to be had. I was bidding on a lovely Irish mare for a friend but it went just over his budget (which was ridiculously low BTW) and sold for 2000g (6 year old nice mare, clover hill / master imp lines and scanned in foal to Renkum Valentino!!) absolute steal, wish I had the room. Also a 5 yr old recently gelded lad, jumping BN, very nice type, great breeding, lovely to look at with loads of scope, 4500g ??? Unbelievable!! This horse was good enough for Henk to cover 4 mares with last year, 4500g is an absolute giveaway but he sold for that price.
There was a bit of grumbling as they were selling lots of mares with foals at foot and were loose jumping them with most of the foals following mum over the fence (not small I might add, 1m-1.10m oxers) and a fair few bit the dust in the process.....Not something I would put my foal through but there was little they could do to stop them TBH. A few people voiced their concerns and it made uncomfortable viewing...
A highlight was seeing the 3 stallions paraded and loose jumped! Give Me Remus put on a good show and just played with the fences. Then Henk bought out a young 3 yr old chestnut stallion who he called Buster - This horse is a SERIOUS one to watch, he only scrapes in at 16hh on tippie toes at present but he loose jumped 1.65m with literally 3 feet to spare, effortless! He is standing at stud next year and I can definitely see myself using him. Next was the star of the show, Renkum Valentino! Such presence and expression, we loved him. He also jumped loose top of the wings and seemed to love the attention! Really playing around and being a show off
Overall I was just so disapointed for Henk and for British Breeding. When are we going to take Breeding seriously in this country?
