I am curious but do those of you who rent your own land find it more cost efficient than being at livery i.e. how does it compare with the price of DIY, part or full livery? How much do you reckon to pay a month, and what facilities do you get with that i.e. electricity and water?

Depends how many you have.

I have 3, I pay 200pcm including water and electricity for fence and lights (but nowhere to, e.g., clip). That includes 2 stables, a big feed room and hay barn and 3 fields over a couple of acres, on a really well sited yard for hacking and access. For my part of the country, it's good and much cheaper than livery. The only downside is the lack of a school, but I am reluctant to pay for a school for my old lad (who mostly hacks in winter anyway) and my 2 year old - it's only the middle pony I miss having a surface with...

I pay £100 per month for a two acre field with a large field shelter and a stable. Water on site by way of a stream that runs down one side of the field. I dont need anything more than that as a happy hacker. There is great access to bridle paths and beach.

I keep two ponies.

I share with two other people, six horses between us, I have two. We have 9 stables, barn/tackroom, school, electric and water plus 22 acres of grazing, divided into 8 fields. I pay £97.50 per horse per month.
We also have fabulous hacking on our doorstep :)

Arghhhh dumb phone!!!

Shavings were about £30 a month so that was around £100 Per month not including feed, but we had no lights.

A few months ago we gave up the field & moved onto livery as we just couldn't manage without lights due to daughters revision sessions after school.

I now pay £100 per month on diy, hay & straw provided & have use anytime of a floodlit arena. Pony also has company & we're all much happier!!

Sounds fab! Where in the country are you to get all that for such a great price if you don't mind me asking?

I'm at livery in winter but during the summer we have a 5 acre field opposite our house (literally 50 yards from my door :D )
We pay £10 a week per horse.
No water or shelter but i just use a hose pipe.
Love it :D

I pay £120 pcm for 5 acres, have 3 horses on it but up to me how many i have. Mains water incl, 2 hay stores, large shelter/stable plus i put up 2 field shelters. Hay delivered to the door £20 per large bale. not amazing grazing but mine don't need it and we are happy hackers so no need for all weather surfaces etc (although would be nice LOL) 3000 acres of off road riding from the gate. Get to move the electric fence when i like to suit my horses, not when someone tells me too! Livery down the rode charge £30 pw ph + everything else and it's not exactly the ritz with out being rude! So putting it that way i save 2/3 just on livery cost, a friend at work keeps her 1 horse on assited livery and her bill is more than it costs to keep all 3 of mine (+1 of mine is a shire) Depends what your needs are, if you want to be riding all through the winter and competing etc a field prob isn't for you. + some of your spring / summer is taken up with field maintenance etc! I wouldn't change it for the world though.

I rent 4 acres on a 10-month lease, it costs me just on £700 a year and I can have up to 4 horses on the land so I can keep 4 for the equivalent of £70 a month - bargain! I did have to pay to have water laid on but as there was already a capped-off main that only cost £70. I am responsible for al fencing and maintenance.
Unfortunately, for the two months that I have to be off the land, I have to use livery which I hate. That's £110 per month per horse + feed/haylage + bedding for DIY. I have no control over the (rubbish as per most livery yards) grazing etc so from choice livery is completely out for me for all sorts of reasons. If I could find decent grass livery for those two months I would take it but grass livery doesn't seem to exist round here.

I pay £100 PCM for about 4 acres. I've got water no electric. Have added our own stables and made a yard area with a hay shed etc 3 horses so yes for me far far cheaper. The best thing though is no restricted t/o unless I decide its too wet.

I have 2 stables, 5 acres, large tack room/hay store and concrete yard for £100 per month. I'm limited to two horses, but can have more if I pay more!

It's not really that much cheaper than livery around me but the freedom is the reason why I'm not at a yard with a school, walker etc... I couldn't stand being restricted anymore- a lot of yards around have stopped turnout, but mine are out 24/7 at the moment.

I pay £100 a month for three acres, two stables, tack room and lean-to hay store. Its just behind my house which is ideal

I have two ponies, 12 sheep, 2 goats and a load of chickens and ducks so its great value for money as far as I am concerned as to find somewhere for that lot wouldnt be easy

The thing about having your own space is that there is no one poking their nose in, no doubt my pony care would be torn apart at some livery yards!

Love the landlord too - he is a complete star

I have 3 ponies and pay £195 a month for about 8 acres and 2 stables with water and electric and fabulous landlord who is always around and can't do enough to help me.... I think it works out a bit cheaper than diy livery and I'm to anti social for big proper yards anyway lol

I pay 35 a month for 2 acres of good grass with natural shelter and on a slope so well draining. There is automatic water which will cost pittance when the bill comes and I have a shed for hay and feed bins etc. How does that work out compared to livery? Well 100+ a month for DIY plus petrol (field is 5 mins from house) and extra time/effort plus bedding plus hay for when in (i've used like 4 small bales this year)... bit of a no brainer really!

The only thing is we have to go on quite busy roads to get to good hacking and obviously it would be nice to have an all weather riding surface and lights and such new fangled things but not worth the extra money to me as it would be about 100 a month more expensive, oh and more work really mucking out and haynets etc!

I rent 3 acres for £600 per year. It is just a field so no water or facilities. I pay to have the field harrowed, hedges cut etc in addition to the rent. I think I have a bargin and am quite happy to have it all to myself to do with what I like.
The farmer let me put a mobile stable on there and I get my water from the guttering into water butts.

i rent 9 acres with no elec but a stable and a barn and water on site with auto water to field in kent for 275 pcm.
i can keep up to 8 on there but only have 6 ponies one of which is a mini shet and the rest are natives.

I rent a smallholding, 11 acres, 5 internal stables, 5 outbuildings, 4 bed house, small lake lol. £1k a month. if I rented a house and had horses on DIY would cost me a lot more
