In the past week/10 days my 5yo ISH mare has managed to injure a hind leg in the field. It hasn't made her lame (thank god) but it can't be comfortable and I worry about her doing herself proper damage. It seems to heal quite nicely for a few days, then gets reopened. Does anyone have any advice/idea what might have caused it? She is barefoot behind and a very straight mover. Is it worth turning out in boots for a time to allow it to heal? Is that even possible when they live out 24/7? TIA!1000023475.jpg

It doesn't look like it, it's actually quite shallow. It looks like she keeps taking the scab off to me. If there is, would one be able to see it with the naked eye or is that a vet and xray job?

I have been cold hosing it once daily and using the Botanice Herbal cream which has previously worked very well for me with small wounds.

It could easily be a thorn which wouldn't be able to be seen but she might need a course of antibiotics. I've also had one where the bone got bruised and released a sequestrum. The sequestrum itself couldn't be seen but the rough surface of the bone below could be. It needed weeks of ab before it healed. The initial wound was bigger and probably deeper than this.

my horse had a tiny puncture wound on the outside of the cannon bone from a thorn that abscessed it was pretty disgusting, she was not lame though. Had to have 10 days of antibiotics to clear it up. If it didnt respond to abs or flared up again they said they would ultrasound to check for foreign body. Luckily didnt come to that but still a hefty bill for a tiny hole!

A grass seed or thorn is a much nicer image then what I had come up with! I have never heard of a sequestration before @nutjob , will have to look into that thank you. Waiting on a call back from the vet now 🤞

No helpful suggestions of what might have caused it but I have found at this time of the year even a very minor injury that scabs over will very quickly be opened up and bleeding from the wretched flies. I had a mare with a very small speedy cut that I could not get to heal over until the winter when all flies had gone. Silver spray is pretty good though if you aren't plagued by too many flies like we are here.

Could be flies, but any animal I've had with a wound that hasn't healed its turned out to have a foreign body.

The cat was interesting, eventually a whole piece of straw came out of his leg, when that was out it healed up straight away.

So the (amazing) vet has been out, had a good poke at it and doesn't think there's anything in there. Has prescribed 4 days of antibiotics given orally and given me a powder to put on it. Ideally I'd put her in to keep her out of the flies for a few days but due to a myriad of reasons that is not currently possible. If it doesn't make progress in the next week vet will be back out and she'll go in for as long as needed. Thank you for your help everyone!!
