One of my mares had 2 very small plague sarcoids on girth area. She wasn't in ridden work at the time (were dealing with lameness) so vet said to leave them for time being.

I got them treated (Liverpool cream)in September last year and 4wks later they came off, all looked good but now they are back.

They are slightly bigger this time, and also 2 new ones between her hind legs

My new vet is coming back on Wed to start treatment on them all.

I haven't discussed fully with my vet what options are available if they come back again but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of 1) reoccurring sarcoids and 2) sarcoids on girth area

This mare is extremely sensitive (chestnut TB mare

) and not too fond of the girth anyway... What do you think the chances of her coming back into ridden work are if sarcoids reoccur? Would something like a sheepskin girth sleeve help or does retirement loom?

Thank you in advance for any replies

Hi,
I'd be interested in what everyone has to say here to. My boy has just turned 6 and has for the past year had a sarcoid on his hock on one of his back legs. We tried treatment with sarcoid off but it didn't work. The vets advice was to leave alone as due to the location any treatment could damage the joint. For the last 9 months it hasn't changed.

However he has now developed what appears to be a plaque sarcoid on the girth area. My vet has suggested that I get this frozen off due to the size but we are waiting to see how it grows first. I now ride him with a nice thick girth sleeve and in fact it seems to have got slightly smaller. My vet thinks the girth was probably rubbing it which casuing some swelling and made it look bigger than it actually was. Has anyone tried the freezing treatment with or without success?

We have a mare on livery with us who has sarcoids under her armpit so to speak but not actually touching her girth area. She has a number all in the same area, maybe 5 or 6 without counting. They tried to put a band around the smaller ones to no real affect as they just grew back. The largest one of all was about the size of a small apple hanging down and was causing her discomfort, this was banded, it was then decided further treatment was needed. She has been down to The Animal Health Trust to have irridium (sp) coils fitted in the area. The vet explained it to me fully (pm if you want to hear) But she was radioactive for a few days so she had to stay there, its basically a cancer treatment. This has had amazing results they have gone for A COMPLETE CURE which if you had seen it you would not believe even possible, its been a fairly long process and shes been on box rest and antibiotics and bute for what seems like forever now but she went out for the first time today and she loved it. If you want any more info on what weve been thru as ive said just Pm and i can always ask my vet as she has been wonderful and really helpful throughout. As for the other treatments, our vet sent off pictures to Liverpool (cant remember the professors name of the top of my head) and he said the cream alone wouldnt be enough for what she had and was very interested to see any kind of inprovement.
We also had the option of susplatin (sp!) injections which she may still need a couple of just to finish the treatment.
No idea of the cost involved im afraid as it all went to the owner then onto the insurance company!
